Heart failure : Symptoms, Causes and Prevention

Heart failure is a condition when the heart muscle becomes so weak that it can not pump enough blood throughout the body at the right pressure. The occurrence of heart failure is usually triggered by health problems, such as:

  • Coronary heart disease.
  • Impaired heart rhythm.
  • Cardiomyopathy or heart muscle disorders.
  • Damage to the heart valve.
  • Hypertension or high blood pressure.
  • Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid gland.
  • Anemia or lack of red blood cells.
  • Myocarditis or inflammation of the heart muscle.
  • Heart defects from birth.
  • Diabetes.

Symptoms of Heart Failure

Heart failure is divided into two, namely the symptoms of chronic heart failure that develops gradually and long and symptoms of acute heart failure that develop rapidly. Someone who has acute heart failure must get treatment at the hospital. The main symptoms of heart failure are:

  • Hard to breathe.
  • The body feels tired.
  • Ankle swelling

There are four types of heart failure, namely:

  • Left heart failure (the left ventricle of the heart cannot pump blood properly throughout the body causes the body to lack oxygen-containing blood).
  • Right-sided heart failure (damage to the right ventricle of the heart which causes the process of taking oxygen in the lungs by the blood does not work well).
  • Systolic heart failure (heart muscle cannot contract properly so that the process of channeling blood containing oxygen throughout the body becomes disrupted).
  • Diastolic heart failure (the heart is hard fill with blood due to the stiffness of the organ muscles).

Causes of Heart Failure

There are three types of heart failure, including:

  • Heart failure that occurs due to damage to the heart valve.
  • Heart failure caused by a weakening of the heart chamber or left ventricle in charge of pumping blood throughout the body.
  • Heart failure caused by left ventricular rigidity so hard heart fill with blood.

Treatment of Heart Failure

In most cases, heart failure is a lifelong condition that can not be treated. Therefore, treatment used is a combination of medication, buttresses equipment cardiac, surgery needs to be done. A healthy lifestyle is also important for those who suffer from it.

Prevention of Heart Failure

  • Eating healthy foods that contain enough iron and avoid excessive salt intake. Apart from foods like spinach, iron can also be obtained from supplements.
  • Maintain weight.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Limit consumption of liquor.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Maintain cholesterol levels and blood pressure at healthy limits.

When to go to the doctor?

You should contact your doctor if you experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling in the feet, legs, ankles, or abdomen.
  • Inability to carry out daily activities.
  • Coughing at night.
  • Confusion or anxiety.
  • Dehydration.
  • Chest pain.
  • Fast heart rate (more than 120 per minute at rest).
