5 Tips for Maintaining Baby Dental Health

Milk teeth in children are as important as adult permanent teeth. Most milk teeth begin to appear at the age of 6 months to 1 year old children. This tooth helps children chew food and talk. The existence of milk teeth is actually very important because it will provide a place for adult teeth.

Start taking care before the baby's teeth grow

Even though your baby's teeth are still "on the way" to the gum surface, you can start treating his oral health early. In infants who do not have teeth, parents still need to treat their gums first so that there are no fungal infections.

You do this by cleaning the baby's gums on both sides after you feed them with a warm wet cloth or a piece of gauze soaked around your finger. In addition, you can also buy a soft rubber like a thimble (which fits on your index finger) to remove leftover food in your baby's mouth.

1. Treat baby teeth as early as possible

Once the baby's teeth appear on the surface, start taking care of them. Many parents consider baby teeth unimportant because they will be replaced with permanent ones later on. However, this first tooth keeps a distance for permanent teeth, while helping the baby chew and talk. If these teeth are not properly treated from the start, they can rot. This will lead to gum infections called gingivitis, which can affect the distance of permanent teeth.

2. Prevent cavities

The first signs of perforated baby teeth are discoloration and small holes in the surface of the teeth. This tooth hole will probably be due to bad habits. For example, letting a baby fall asleep with a pacifier a bottle containing milk (or even juice) stays in his mouth.

Milk containing sugar can eventually cause cavities. Therefore, do not leave the baby with a bottle for a long time, especially if the baby is no longer breastfeeding and only uses the bottle for comfort.

3. Start to brush your teeth with toothpaste at the age of 2 years

After the baby's teeth grow, it's time to start brushing his teeth. At the age of 2 years, use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste and brush your child's teeth twice a day.

4. Maintain fluoride intake

Even if you don't use fluoride toothpaste, your child should get enough fluoride which is important to prevent tooth decay.

5. Dental examination

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that babies get their first dental examination at the age of 1 year, or when their first teeth appear.

When the child's teeth have undergone discoloration, that is, there are white patches that are signs of damage to dental minerals, parents must begin to be vigilant. The damage can continue to become a hole in the tooth.

Some things you can do to prevent cavities, as reported by Babycenter. First, brush your child's teeth at least twice a day. Brush your teeth in the morning and just before bed. Use a child's special toothbrush with a small head and a handle that fits your hand.

Second, gently brush the inside and outside of your child's teeth, and his tongue (if he lets you), to expel the bacteria that cause bad breath. Third, change their toothbrush when it looks damaged and worn.
