6 Food taboo for People with AIDS

Although no drug has been found to cure HIV disease, it does not mean that people with HIV do not have hope for life. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the characteristics of a healthy diet include sufficient essential nutrients, consisting of various types of food from various food groups, providing enough energy to maintain ideal body weight, and not containing fat, sugar, salt, and excessive alcohol.

AIDS sufferers, who already have a weakened immune system, need to pay more attention to their diet. Healthy food can help strengthen the immune system. Conversely, unsafe food can be a way for germs to infect AIDS sufferers. In addition, some foods can have uncomfortable side effects for AIDS sufferers.

What foods should be avoided?

1. Foods that are not prepared safely

Preparation in making dishes cannot be underestimated. Any food, if not prepared safely, has the potential to contain germs. How to prepare food safely is by:

  • Wash hands before preparing food.
  • Wash food, especially fruits and vegetables with clean water.
  • Wash cutting equipment - such as cutting boards and knives - before using with hot water and soap.
  • Melt frozen food from the freezer in a refrigerator or microwave. Avoid liquefying food at room temperature.

2. Foods that are not cooked

For people with AIDS, you should avoid consuming raw and undercooked foods. This food has the potential to contain germs, which can be very detrimental to you. Raw foods that are often served include sushi and seafood.

Unpasteurized milk is also better avoided. When eating meat, fish, and poultry, make sure it's cooked until cooked. You can check the maturity of food with a food thermometer.

3. Certain types of food and carbonated drinks

Be careful when eating certain foods such as cabbage, and nuts. It's a good idea to avoid carbonated drinks like soda and soft drinks.

Because the food and drink has the potential to produce a lot of gas in the stomach so you feel bloated. As a result, your appetite is disrupted so it tends to make you eat less. If left prolonged, it can cause weight loss and make the body more difficult to fight infection.

4. Caffeine and alcohol

Sufficient fluid needs are very important for people with AIDS. The liquid you consume can help transport the nutrients you consume throughout the body. In addition, fluids can help reduce drug side effects, avoid dehydration, dry mouth, and constipation, and help overcome fatigue complaints.

Intake that contains caffeine or alcohol can make you urinate frequently, thereby increasing fluid discharge. Make sure you consume at least 8-10 glasses of liquid per day. This amount needs to be added if you experience diarrhea or vomiting.

5. Foods high in iron

For people with AIDS, it is recommended to limit iron consumption to 45 mg per day, unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Iron is found in many green vegetables, liver, red meat, and others.

Iron that is too high can increase the activity of certain types of bacteria, which are detrimental to those with weak immunity. Iron supplementation also has the potential to cause constipation.

6. Drinking Raw Water

Beverages are an important requirement for the body. While drinks consumed for people with AIDS must be drinks that are clean of germs or bacteria. The danger of drinking raw water, especially drinking water from filters that are consumed without cooking, should not be consumed. So the water you drink should be cooked to boil. The aim is to avoid the body so that it is not infected with bacteria and viruses found in water. Cooking water until boiling can make the source of the disease disappear.

Thus some types of food should be avoided by AIDS patients. Make sure you eat healthy foods, and are prepared safely to maintain health. Also do other healthy lifestyles, such as exercise, so that your immune system increases.
