7 Intake that Can Not Be Eaten When Taking Medication

Medication can indeed help you to be healthier. But to get maximum results, the drug must not be mixed with several types of food or drink.

One rule that is often recommended when taking medicine is not mixing the drug with milk. The reason is the compound in milk will dissolve the medicinal properties.

Have you ever thought that what you eat and drink can affect work and the effectiveness of the drugs you consume? Actually, drugs and food can indeed interact with each other. This often leads to losses, because it can reduce the effectiveness of the drug and increase the likelihood of unwanted side effects.

Among the various kinds of foods and drinks, here are the most commonly found to interact with certain drugs:

1. Milk

Avoid milk when you take antibiotics, such as tetracycline and ciprofloxacin; and osteoporosis drugs such as alendronate. Milk and processed products, such as yogurt and cheese can slow or prevent the absorption of these drugs so they cannot have maximum effect. This is because in the stomach and intestines of twelve fingers (duodenum) calcium in milk and its processed products binds to antibiotics so that the process of absorption of the drug can be disrupted.

The solution is to take antibiotics 1-2 hours before or after eating. Likewise with consumption of supplements containing calcium.

2. Banana

Avoid bananas when you take ACE inhibitors, such as captopril, enalapril, lisinopril and ramipril. The drug is usually prescribed to lower blood pressure or treat heart failure. How the drug works is to relax the muscles of the blood vessel walls so that blood flow is better, also so that the heart can pump more optimally. However, the drug inhibits the release of potassium minerals in the blood through urine.

Bananas are high-potassium fruit, so if consumed in large amounts together with ACE inhibitors can increase the potassium level in the blood. In fact, potassium levels that are too high in the blood can trigger an irregular heartbeat and palpitations.

3. Balinese Oranges (grapefruit)

Avoid eating grapefruit if you take statin cholesterol medications, such as atorvastatin and lovastatin. Substances in the fruit can interfere with enzymes that break down the drug in the digestive tract, so that the drug lasts longer in the blood. Furthermore, it will increase the risk of drug side effects.

4. Green leafy vegetables

Spinach, broccoli, kale, and other types of green leafy vegetables can make the work of anti-clotting drugs such as warfarin less effective. This is because both have the opposite effect.

Green leafy vegetables are rich in vitamin K which is important for blood clotting. Conversely, warfarin works to inhibit blood clots. These drugs are usually consumed routinely by those who have heart rhythm disorders, use artificial heart valves, and who have a history of heart attack.

If you use warfarin, limit consumption of green leafy vegetables. Or, consume other alternatives that are also healthy but low in vitamin K, such as beets, turnips, various types of pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes.

5. Garlic

Consumption of garlic can increase the risk of bleeding due to the use of NSAID-class anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, diclofenac potassium, diclofenac sodium, piroksikam, and meloxicam. This is because garlic can reduce the body's ability to freeze blood.

6. Coffee

Avoid drinking coffee if you are on clozapine type antipsychotic treatment. Caffeine in coffee can increase the levels of these substances in the blood, so the risk of side effects will increase.

You also need to be careful when you are taking asthma medications that function as salts, for example salbutamol, ipratroprium, or theophylline. Excessive caffeine consumption can inhibit the effects of these drugs in an emergency, namely when an asthma attack occurs.

7. Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol can change the work of the drug, whether you take medicine with alcohol, consume alcohol immediately after taking medication, or take medication after consuming alcohol. In addition, alcohol can also strengthen drug side effects.

Therefore, you must avoid alcohol, especially if you use several drugs at once. Primarily, antihistamines, pain medications such as codeine and paracetamol, antidiabetic drugs, anti-HIV / AIDS drugs, and antibiotics. The more drugs combined with alcohol, the greater the risk of adverse effects.

One risk that is quite dangerous, namely gastrointestinal damage after taking painkillers. Other effects due to alcohol interactions with drugs, namely excessive drowsiness, sensation of drift, impaired motor control, memory disorders, nausea, abdominal cramps to vomiting. Keep in mind, side effects can arise even if you only consume one standard alcoholic beverage (more or less containing 14 grams of pure alcohol).

Basically, drugs that are decomposed too quickly do not have time to work so that they have less effect. Conversely, drugs that last too long in the body can accumulate to reach dangerous levels.

Therefore, so that the medication taken works effectively without causing adverse side effects, always pay attention to how to use and drink the right time. Do not hesitate to consult further with the doctor to find out information about what is allowed and not consumed as long as you are on certain medications.
