Avoid breast cancer by lowering body weight

To get that proof, the researchers conducted a study of 50 women who experienced excessive weight, aged 30-45 years. These women have a genetic risk for developing breast cancer. From the studies that have been carried out, it appears that women who reduce calorie intake to only 650 calories twice a week can reduce the hormone levels that trigger cancer significantly.

Are you at high risk for breast cancer?

Until now, breast cancer was the second most common cause of death, after cervical cancer. Know the risk factors associated with breast cancer below.

1. Age. The risk of breast cancer increases with age.

2. Genetic factors. Changes in certain genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 have a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

3. Family history of breast cancer. The risk of having breast cancer is higher if:

  • There are one or more families of first-degree offspring, namely mothers, sisters or girls, who have breast cancer — especially if diagnosed before menopause.
  • Second-degree families such as grandmothers, aunts, or nieces of fathers and mothers affected by breast cancer.
  • Family history has cancer in both breasts before menopause.
  • Two or more siblings have breast or ovarian cancer.
  • Brother with a history of breast cancer.

4. Reproductive history such as menstruation before the age of 12 years, first pregnancy over the age of 30 years, not reaching enough gestational age (premature birth), never having been pregnant, or menopause after age 55 years.

5. Using hormone combination therapy. Using hormone therapy to replace estrogen and progesterone loss at menopause for more than 5 years can increase the risk of breast cancer.

6. History of radiation therapy. Women who have had radiation therapy on the chest or breast (such as Hodgkin's lymphoma) before age 30 are at a high risk of developing breast cancer later on.

7. Another factor. Other things that might cause cancer are smoking, exposure to cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogenic), and shift workers

Although there are risk factors, but all of them can be prevented or postponed, or if they already exist, they can be handled diligently by early detection by breast self-examination or with medical equipment.

From various sources, the risk for breast cancer (including other cancers) can be reduced by making lifestyle changes. There are several ways to reduce the risk of cancer, one of which is by losing weight.

Losing weight can prevent breast cancer?

Researchers from several institutions in the United States, including the City of Hope National Medical Center, Washington University, and Indiana University. They found that weight loss can help reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The results of this study were published in the journal "Cancer" by the American Cancer Society.

"For the past few decades, we know that obesity is associated with an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. "It's very difficult, even almost impossible, to show that weight loss in someone who is overweight or obese will reduce the risk of cancer," said Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, one of the researchers.

In this study, the researchers analyzed information from 61,335 women aged 50-79 years who had never had breast cancer and with normal mammography. This data came from the World Health Initiative Observational Study. Three years later, these women measured their height, weight, and body mass index examined to see their changes.

In the third year, women who experienced weight loss (5 percent or more) experienced a 12 percent reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer than women who were stable in weight. Women who experienced weight gain generally did not experience an increased risk of breast cancer, but had an increased incidence of triple negative breast cancer by 54 percent, which tends to be more aggressive than other types of breast cancer.

Although the incidence of breast cancer is relatively high, it does not mean that breast cancer cannot be prevented. In fact, a person can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
