Benefits of Fish Oil in Reducing Disease Risk

Fish oil is often one of the main ingredients of supplements, both in capsules, pills, and liquids, to help deal with various types of diseases. What exactly is the content and efficacy of these health-supporting food ingredients?

Fish oil can be obtained by eating fish directly or in supplement form. Fish oil is special because it contains omega-3, an essential fatty acid that is needed for health but is not produced naturally by the body.

There are two types of omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil, namely docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel are examples of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Every 100 grams of these fish contains approximately 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids.

What are the benefits of fish oil?

The study found that fish oil has a number of benefits, including:




1. Reducing triglyceride levels

Fish oil is proven to reduce triglyceride levels in the blood. The risk of heart disease will increase with high levels of triglycerides in the body.

2. Maintain heart health

Eating fish rich in fish oil can help maintain heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. Research shows that those who consume fish oil regularly are at a lower risk of having a heart attack, and have more controlled blood pressure.

3. Prevent blockage of blood vessels

Fish oil can prevent blockage of blood vessels (atherosclerosis). Research shows that the consumption of fish oil can reduce bad cholesterol levels and prevent inflammation, thereby reducing the risk of blood vessel blockage.

4. Reducing the symptoms of lupus

A study revealed that the benefits of fish oil were able to reduce the symptoms of lupus. The study found that people with lupus who ate tuna and mackerel can reduce the symptoms of lupus.

5. Good for pregnant women

Fish oil, besides being good for general health conditions, also has many benefits for pregnant women. The content of DHA and EPA in fish oil can reduce the risk of preeclampsia, preterm labor, and increase the baby's birth weight.

6. Helps treat multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord nervous system caused by various factors such as genetics, sex, age and autoimmune. A study revealed that consuming fish oil for approximately 3 months can help treat multiple sclerosis sufferers.

7. Reducing depression

One study found that someone who was depressed - the level of omega-3 in his body was low. Therefore, to overcome depression, omega-3 is needed to overcome it.

Other research reveals that fish oil is rich in EPA is more effective in reducing symptoms of depression than DHA content. However, findings related to this matter still need further research.

8. Reducing joint pain

Fish oil which is quite popular as a health supplement is often associated with its health benefits for cancer prevention. But so far the research shows that the claim is not right, because there is no effect of consumption of fish oil on the reduced risk of cancer.

Is Fish Oil at Risk?

Although rich in nutrients and has a variety of benefits, the consumption of fish oil in high doses can actually endanger health. There are several risks that might be caused, including:

  • Increases the risk of bleeding if you consume more than 3 grams of fish oil per day.
  • Increased levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or 'bad' cholesterol.
  • Triggers disorders of blood sugar levels.
  • In patients with heart transplants, omega-3 fatty acids can affect the heart rate.
  • Some fish such as mackerel and albacore tuna are at risk of containing mercury poison, although not necessarily contained in fish oil.
  • Fish oil has the potential to affect the work of certain drugs, such as blood thinners.
  • Too much consumption of fish oil can increase the risk of stroke.
  • It can cause heartburn, nausea, rash, nosebleeds and liquid stools.

Low-dose fish oil is relatively safe for most people, such as pregnant and lactating women. But considering the conditions and medical history of each person is different, you should consult a doctor before consuming fish oil to avoid unwanted risks.

To maximize its nutrition, fish oil is recommended to be consumed in its original form, not in the form of supplements that have undergone a process of processing. Because as much as any nutrition obtained from supplements is not comparable to the nutritional content obtained directly from fish meat.
