Blood Type Determined Vulnerability to Coronavirus?

Recently, there was an issue that people with blood type A were more at risk of contracting the Corona virus, and people with blood type O were considered to be more resistant to this virus. Is that true or is it just hoax news? Let's look at the review here.

Blood type is determined based on the type of antigen attached to the red blood cells. The individual antigens are inherited from the genes of both parents. Based on this antigen, blood groups are divided into blood types A, B, AB, and O.

Is Blood Type A More Vulnerable to Coronavirus?

Previously, it needs to be emphasized in advance that claims regarding blood type determine a person's susceptibility to Coronavirus infection cannot be confirmed. This statement comes from a study that used COVID-19 patient data in two regions in China, namely Wuhan and Shenzhen.

In this study, it was found that the number of COVID-19 patients who had blood type A was more than patients with blood type O., in general, the number of people who had blood type A in both cities was smaller than those with blood type O.

This difference in number is significant enough that researchers include that people with blood type A are more susceptible to Coronavirus infection. And conversely, people with blood type O have a lower risk of developing this disease.

However, it should be remembered that research on the risk of getting COVID-19 based on blood type was only done once and only in a small proportion of sufferers. Also, there are still some limitations in this study that make the results need to be explored further before it can be ascertained.

So, it's still too early to state that people with blood type A are more susceptible to being infected with Coronavirus than people with blood type O.

What has been known so far, a person's vulnerability to any viral infection is influenced by the strength of his immune system. The weak immune system, for example, due to old age or chronic diseases, can make a person more easily infected with a virus.

Therefore, whatever your blood type, take maximum precautions, both for yourself and others. Wash your hands regularly with soap and running water or a hand sanitizer. Wear a mask when you are sick, and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

Also, reduce out of the house or gather with many people, except for the sake of urgent or seeing a doctor. Use a mask when traveling when you are coughing or catching a cold.
