Effect of Caffeine on Babies and Breastfeeding Mothers

Consumption of safe amounts of caffeine

The amount of caffeine that is still safe to consume for nursing mothers is no more than 200 milligrams per day. But keep in mind, not only coffee that contains caffeine. Cola drinks, energy drinks, tea and chocolate also contain caffeine in them.

As an illustration, the following estimates of the amount of caffeine contained in drinks:

  • One can of cola drink (350 ml) contains about 40 mg of caffeine.

5. Babies are at risk of developing iron deficiency

9. Diarrhea

Drinking a lot of coffee can cause the stomach to become bloated, causing diarrhea in nursing mothers. Diarrhea in nursing mothers can affect baby diarrhea. Mothers who often consume caffeine should observe the consistency of baby defecation.

Although there is nothing that forbids breastfeeding mothers to drink coffee, but remember, do not consume them excessively. Also, remember that it is important for you to adopt a healthy lifestyle and regulate a nutritious diet during breastfeeding, for your health and your baby's health.
