Cause of Vomiting Blood during Pregnancy

Symptoms of vomiting of blood during pregnancy can be caused by several things, but in general, vomiting blood is caused by injuries to the upper gastrointestinal tract, either the stomach or the esophagus. Vomiting of blood during pregnancy can also be caused by several conditions, among others:

Mallory-Weiss Syndrome

This condition is bleeding in the esophagus that occurs due to injury in the esophagus wall. This condition can occur in both children and adults. In pregnant women, excessive vomiting can injure the esophagus wall and cause blood vomiting.

Stomach acid disease

Furthermore, vomiting of blood during pregnancy can be caused by gastric acid disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This condition is generally characterized by heartburn, or a sore sensation in the chest due to rising stomach acid into the esophagus. If pregnant women experience chronic GERD, inflammation occurs in the esophagus, and will result in vomiting of blood during pregnancy.

Stomach ulcers (gastritis)

The cause of blood vomiting during pregnancy can also be caused by inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis). This condition can occur in the long term if not treated immediately. Gastritis is commonly caused by bacterial infection of Helicobacter pylori, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, or the consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, in the long run. Bleeding in the stomach can occur when the inflammation has begun to damage the blood vessels. This condition is usually characterized by abdominal pain at the top, indigestion, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

Rupture of esophageal varices

Vomiting of blood during pregnancy can also be caused because pregnant women experience varicose veins in the esophagus, namely the widening condition of blood vessels in the esophagus. This condition can arise when the blood flow to the liver is blocked by the mass or scar tissue of the liver, thus causing an increase in pressure inside the blood vessels around the liver. This is what triggers small blood vessels in the esophagus to become wide and susceptible to rupture, and will cause bleeding in the esophagus.

Side effects of morning sickness

Pregnant women who have vomiting blood during pregnancy can be caused by morning sickness or prolonged nausea and vomiting. Continuous vomiting can cause injury to the lining of the esophagus that can cause bleeding. This condition should be immediately checked to the doctor to help relieve and stop the bleeding in the lining of the esophagus.

Stomach ulcers

Another condition that can cause vomiting of blood during pregnancy is a gastric ulcer. Gastric ulcer is a wound that appears on the wall of the stomach due to erosion of the lining of the stomach wall. This wound also has the potential to appear on the intestinal wall of 12 fingers (duodenum) and esophagus. The main symptoms that will be felt if the mother has a peptic ulcer is pain or stinging on the abdomen.

The main causes of gastric ulcers are generally the same as gastritis, namely bacterial Helicobacter pylori infection, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, and long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. If Mother is experiencing the condition, immediately consult a doctor to get further treatment.

In some rare cases, blood vomiting in pregnant women can also be caused by other conditions, such as blood, swallowing nosebleeds, esophageal cancer, and blood disorders, such as leukemia, haemophilia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia.
