Causes and Ways to Overcome Dry Vagina

A dry vagina is a problem that is often complained of by some women. This is because vaginal dryness can cause discomfort and pain during intercourse.

Under normal conditions, the vagina will feel moist because it has natural lubricants produced by the cervix. Production of vaginal fluids will generally increase when getting sexual stimulation, so the vagina does not feel pain during intercourse.

What are the symptoms of vaginal dryness?

You will feel sick when having sex. In addition, pain is also experienced when you sit, stand, exercise, urinate and even when working. This problem can interfere with women's activities, whether they are sexually active or not.

Changes also occur in the appearance of the vagina and vulva, the lips of the vagina will look thinner. You may also experience irritation and heat.

If you experience feeling hot, itchy and uncomfortable in the vaginal area, you should immediately visit a doctor. The symptoms will be a diagnosis with questions about how long you have experienced these symptoms, about the treatment being taken, or how you cleanse the vagina.

Usually, the doctor will do a pelvic test, check the vagina to make sure there is redness or not. This test will help you find the cause or the possibility of an infection such as a urinary tract infection.

Various Causes of Dry Vagina

Production of natural lubricants in the vagina can be optimal as long as estrogen hormone levels are sufficient. Estrogen also functions to keep the vaginal lining elastic, thick and healthy.

However, during menopause, the production of the hormone estrogen begins to decrease, and will gradually stop. Decreasing levels of the hormone estrogen can cause vaginal atrophy, a condition in which the vaginal wall becomes thinner and less elastic. The production of natural lubricants also decreases, causing vaginal dryness.

Apart from menopause, the dry vagina can also be caused by various conditions such as the following:

  • Lack of warming up or foreplay before intercourse.
  • Having problems in relationships with spouses or social environments.
  • Stress or feel anxious.
  • Use certain feminine cleaning products, such as soap with hard formulations, or spray and vaginal douche.
  • The vagina is exposed to detergent, wearing underwear or a towel that is washed with detergent containing allergy-causing chemicals.
  • The vagina is exposed to chemicals, such as chemicals in hot springs or swimming pools.
  • New giving birth or breastfeeding.
  • Have had ovarian or ovarian removal surgery.
  • Underwent treatment for cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Take certain antidepressants or decongestant drugs.
  • Have allergies.
  • Suffering

Dry Vaginal Handling Steps

The following are some ways to deal with vaginal dryness. But before carrying out these steps, it is advisable to consult with your doctor first.

  • Using lubricants

Water-based lubricants are usually effective for several hours. In addition to moisturizing the vagina, the lubricant also functions to facilitate the opening of the vagina, so that the penetration process runs easier, and does not cause pain during intercourse. Creamy lubricants can usually last for a full day.

  • Utilizing vaginal moisturizer

Vaginal moisturizer is effective for reducing vaginal dryness for several days with one use.

  • Using the vaginal estrogen ring

This ring-shaped soft object will be inserted into the vagina. This ring will release the estrogen hormone gradually to the vaginal tissue. Rings need to be replaced every 12 weeks.

  • Use vaginal estrogen tablets

This tablet is not for drinking. How to use this tablet is by inserting the tablet into the vagina, once a day for the first two weeks. After that, you can use it every two weeks, until the time specified by the doctor.

  • Apply vaginal estrogen cream

You can use an applicator to apply the cream to the vagina. The cream is used every day for 1-2 weeks, then reduce the frequency to 1-3 times a week or according to the doctor's recommendation. Rings, tablets, and vaginal creams are not recommended for women who have a history of endometrial cancer, have had vaginal bleeding, have breast cancer, pregnant women or nursing mothers.

Hormone Therapy for Overcoming Dry Vagina

In addition, there is also hormone therapy to treat vaginal dryness due to hormonal changes. This therapy can be done in two ways, namely oral or oral medication, and transdermal by applying hormones to the skin to be absorbed into the body.

The transdermal method usually uses spray or patches. Transdermal does not affect the kidneys, whereas oral methods can have an impact on the liver because estrogen pills that enter the body must pass through the liver.

However, keep in mind that hormone therapy has risks. All estrogen products can have side effects, such as vaginal bleeding and breast pain. Long-term research has found that consumption of estrogen hormone pills can increase the risk of stroke and endometrial cancer. Meanwhile, the consumption of a combination of estrogen and progesterone pills can increase the risk of heart attack, breast cancer, and stroke.

Be sure to consult with your doctor to get the most appropriate treatment recommendations for your vaginal dry problems. To prevent vaginal dryness, avoid the trigger factors, such as the use of bath soap, soap containing perfume, and lotions around the sensitive area of the vagina. These products can aggravate dry vaginal conditions.
