Causes and Ways to Overcome Shoulder Blade

The shoulder blade or scapula is a triangular shaped bone located on the back of the shoulder or upper back. Scapula pain can be caused by many factors. In general scapula pain is not a serious problem to worry about.

One of the causes of shoulder blade pain is because the muscles are tightened or have a back injury. Too long working at the computer, lifting too much weight, and excessive exercise are the most common causes of muscle tension or back injury.

Diseases Associated with Bone Splint Pain

Apart from stiff muscles and back injuries, scapula pain can also be caused by certain diseases, including:

Aortic dissection

Aortic dissection occurs when a blood vessel that leads to the heart is torn and causes very piercing pain in the back of the back. This condition generally occurs in men aged 60–70 years.




Pulmonary embolism

Pulmonary embolism occurs when large blood vessels in the lungs become blocked. This blockage can be caused by blood clots in the limbs being released and carried into the lungs. In many cases, the sufferer will experience very piercing pain in the shoulder blade when the blockage occurs.

Broken shoulder blades

Broken shoulder blades can occur due to falls, accidents, or trauma. When the shoulder blade is broken, you will feel pain, bruising and swelling around the shoulder blade. You also will not be able to lift your arms at the side of the broken shoulder blade.

Apart from the three diseases mentioned above, spinal pain can also be affected by several other diseases, such as scoliosis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, gallstones, spinal stenosis, lung cancer, liver cancer, lymphoma, or esophageal cancer (esophagus).

Get enough rest

The first thing you can do when you feel pain in the shoulder blade is to rest, especially if the pain is caused by an injury. Adequate rest will help restore your condition.

Compress with cold or warm water

Pain in the shoulder blades can be relieved by using cold or warm compresses. You can compress the painful area for 15 minutes and repeat it every four hours.

Massage your back

Gentle massage in the area of the shoulder blades can help stiff muscles relax and overcome the pain that arises due to excessive muscle activity.

Sports and stretching

Doing push ups, pull ups, or sit ups can help strengthen the muscles in the back and abdomen, while helping to relieve pain. You can also stretch so that the stiff muscles relax. Stretching will improve blood flow to muscles and joints, which can relieve pain and improve movement of the joint.

Eat healthy food

Some foods can help relieve the pain that arises, especially fruits, vegetables, or foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon.

When to go to the doctor?

If the pain is felt to be very intense and disturbing, or does not go away, it is recommended to check with your doctor.

In addition, immediately consult a doctor if scapula pain is accompanied by several symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain and shortness of breath.
  • Excessive sweating and fever.
  • The feet are painful and swollen.
  • Coughing bleeding and impaired vision.
  • Irregular heartbeat and difficulty speaking.
  • Some of the body has paralysis.
  • A decrease in consciousness.

Therapy for shoulder blade pain depends on the cause and severity of the disease. The healing period will also be different for each person.
