Causes of Excessive Hair Loss That Should Be Cautioned

Losing hair strands every day is normal. But if hair falls more than 100 strands per day, it is considered abnormal. There are many causes of excessive hair loss. You can read some of them in this article.

Hair loss of 50 to 100 strands a day is still considered natural. This should not cause problems or make your head become bald quickly. Why? Because new hair will grow and replace hair loss. However, if hair loss is excessive, especially if accompanied by the growth of disturbed or stopped hair, the head can lose its beautiful crown, both temporarily and permanently.

Causes of excessive hair loss

Excessive hair loss (more than 100 strands per day) is medically referred to as telogen effluvium. This loss occurs thoroughly in the head so it does not cause baldness in just one area. As a result, the hair looks thin overall. This condition can occur after the body has been stressed or depressed, both physically and emotionally.

In general, excessive hair loss and slow hair growth can be caused by the following factors:

  • Emotional stress, such as losing a job, undergoing a divorce process, a severely ill family, and so on.
  • Intensive physical stress, such as childbirth or high workload.
  • There are hormonal changes, such as those that occur in pregnant women.
  • Nutritional deficiencies, such as protein and iron, for example in patients with eating disorders.
  • Suffering from certain diseases, such as severe infections, alopecia areata, thyroid gland disease, fungal infections in the head, autoimmune diseases, and syphilis.
  • Side effects of drugs, such as the use of birth control pills, high-dose vitamin A, antidepressant drugs, and hormonal drugs.
  • Having a high fever.
  • Anemia
  • Bodyweight drops 9 kg or more.
  • Just recovered from illness.
  • Underwent certain treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • The use of hard hair care products, such as hair dye, hair bleaching, or the habit of using a hair heater.

Excessive hair loss or telogen effluvium can occur in men and women of all ages. However, women experience this more often, especially if there are hormonal changes. Excessive hair loss usually starts between 6 weeks to 3 months after stress or certain medical conditions affect you.

Overcoming the Causes of Excessive Hair Loss

In some cases, excessive hair loss does not require special treatment. Your hair can grow and thick again in a few months later if the root of the problem or the cause of excessive hair loss is resolved.

Some cases of excessive hair loss may also require treatment. You can consult a dermatologist to diagnose the cause. If hair loss is considered to be in the stage of requiring special care, then the doctor will recommend medication, removal of part of the scalp, laser therapy to grow hair, or maybe a hair transplant surgery.

Prevent excessive hair loss

In order for excessive hair loss to not worsen, you can take preventive measures, including limiting hair styling using heaters and chemicals, such as clipping, perming hair, or coloring hair. In addition, avoid braiding or tying your hair, and combing your hair in wet conditions. You can use a baby shampoo that tends to be softer, to wash your hair.

Maintain healthy hair and body from now on so that the causes of excessive hair loss do not happen to you.
