Corn benefits for pregnant women

Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are an important energy source for pregnant women. Even around 50 percent of the calories needed by the body must be obtained from carbohydrate foods.

Vitamin B

Corn contains vitamins B3, B5, B6 and B9. Vitamin B3 serves to maintain the nervous system and healthy skin, vitamin B5 helps obtain energy from food, vitamin B6 helps overcome morning sickness and produces red blood cells, while vitamin B9 or folate is useful to prevent anemia in pregnant women and fetal neural tube defects.




Potassium

Feet feels cramped when pregnant? It could be because of lack of potassium. Potassium plays an important role in helping muscles contract, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in body cells, and delivering nerve signals. Potassium also plays a role in keeping blood pressure stable.

Fiber

Corn contains quite a lot of fiber which is important for pregnant women. Fiber makes food move smoothly in the digestive tract. This makes pregnant women avoid constipation. In addition, fiber-rich foods are usually also rich in other nutrients needed by pregnant women and the fetus.

Protein

During pregnancy, especially the second and third trimesters, protein is one of the most needed nutrients. Antioxidants

Corn contains antioxidants. The amount of antioxidants in corn even tends to be higher than other grains. Here are some kinds of antioxidants in corn:

  • Lutein, protects the eyes from cell damage.

Zeaxanthin, one of the most common carotenoids found in plants and thought to improve eye health.

Ferulic acid is thought to be able to protect liver and nerve function and prevent inflammation, diabetes and aging. However, the effect on pregnant women and the fetus has not been studied.

  • Prevent Anemia

Blood deficiency during pregnancy should not be considered trivial because this is very susceptible to disrupt the growth of the baby. Even if anemia occurs in pregnant women, it will potentially cause miscarriages and babies born prematurely. The most vulnerable is the occurrence of birth defects in infants. The solution is to maintain healthy food intake during pregnancy including the consumption of foods rich in iron content such as corn. Iron will help the production of red blood cells in pregnant women to prevent anemia.

  • For the Development of Fetal Memory

Thiamin contained in corn is very useful to support and optimize the development of fetal memory. After being born, the baby will have a better level of intelligence. The most important thing during pregnancy is to fulfill all of its nutritional needs including consuming corn which is rich in thiamin.

The benefits of corn for pregnant women can not only be obtained by consuming corn in whole form. As an alternative, corn-based foods such as cornstarch fortified with additional nutrients or corn oil can also be a good choice for consumption during pregnancy.

However, don't just stick to corn. There are still many other foods that are also well consumed to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women.
