Enlarging Pregnancy Opportunities by Observing Cervical Mucus

Cervical mucus is mucus that comes out of the cervix, triggered by the hormone estrogen. Production of cervical mucus generally increases during the fertile period. Looking at cervical mucus can help determine when the right time to have sex and help increase the chances of pregnancy.

Cervical mucus in women serves to prevent the entry of foreign objects into the uterus. In addition, cervical mucus also helps the movement of sperm into the uterus.

The condition of the cervical mucus is affected by hormonal changes, including during the fertile period, where the egg is released from the ovary and is ready to be fertilized. This is the reason for looking at the changes that occur in cervical mucus, it can help increase the chance of sperm meeting the egg.

Characteristics of Cervical Mucus in Fertility

Mucus or cervical fluid is produced by glands in and around the cervix. The amount and thickness of the cervical mucus can change from time to time according to changes in hormone levels in the body.

In the fertile period, the cervical mucus will be clear like raw egg white, also called egg white cervical mucus (EWCM). This mucus has a more elastic texture and the right pH for sperm.

Mucus texture like this helps protect sperm so that they reach the egg. So, it can be said that this is the best time to have sex if you want to get pregnant.

How to Check Cervical Mucus

Given the importance of the right condition of the cervical fluid to help increase the chances of pregnancy, let's check the consistency of your cervical fluid before intercourse. You can do this with the following steps:

1. Comfortable position

Take a comfortable position, either sitting or squatting on the toilet, or standing up by lifting and placing one foot on the toilet seat.

2. Take cervical mucus

If the cervical mucus attaches to the panties, you just need to take it away. If not, you can use toilet paper to wipe the vagina. You can also insert your index finger or middle finger into the vagina, as close as possible to the cervix, of course after washing and drying your hands thoroughly.

3. Check consistency

After getting cervical mucus, check the consistency using the thumb and forefinger of the hand:

  • If it's dry, thick, and feels sticky, it could be that your fertile period hasn't arrived.
  • If it feels like a cream, maybe the fertile period will arrive soon.
  • If it feels wet, runny, and starts to stretch, it's likely that the fertile period is near.
  • If it feels very wet, runny, very easy to stretch, and clear resembles raw egg white, then it is a good time to have sex, if you want to get pregnant.

Avoid checking cervical mucus during intercourse, or afterward. At this time, cervical mucus will be difficult to distinguish from semen. In addition, so that the cervical mucus becomes thin and elastic around the fertile period, don't forget to drink enough water and not clean the vagina with vaginal cleansing fluid.

But keep in mind, it takes time to be able to observe and know the changes in cervical mucus appropriately. Preferably, consult your obstetrician to find out your fertility period, or if you have not yet got offspring after being married for some time.
