Excessive Sports, What are the Dangers?

Exercise is a form of planned and structured physical activity that involves repetitive body movements and is intended to improve physical fitness. The habit of exercising regularly is very good for your health.

However, there are a number of conditions that indicate that you are getting addicted to sports. Such conditions for example exercise becomes the most important thing in your life, feeling guilty (even stressed) if you miss a training session to feel you still have to exercise even when you're sick.

Although important for physical and mental health, excessive exercise is not a good sign. Having a strong desire or drive to exercise (compulsive exercise) can mean that it is taking control of your life. In the end, exercise is no longer something that is healthy, fun, and supports your life.

One important question that you can ask yourself is: "Why do I exercise?" Do you do it to stay healthy and something you like? If yes, that is very beneficial! However, if you exercise because you feel guilty if you don't do it, this can be a sign of something more serious.




Not everyone is suitable for exercise

Some people are not allowed to exercise at all because this can lead to the risk of fatal injury and death. The prohibition on this exercise is primarily intended for people who have aortic stenosis, symptomatic heart failure, aneurysm, and dyspnea.

Meanwhile, some other people with certain conditions are still allowed to exercise, even though they must be under the supervision of a doctor, such as the elderly, cancer patients, and people with certain chronic diseases. But for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy in less than 24 hours or experience pain in the place of origin of cancer is not recommended for exercise.

What is called compulsive exercise?

If you think a lot about exercising, especially when doing other things, or you have a strong desire and often will exercise, maybe you have exercise compulsion. Compulsive exercise can be related to psychological illnesses, such as eating disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

For example, feel interested in exercising because of extreme worries about your body weight or body shape. This can be a sign of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Or, you exercise because you are afraid that something bad will happen to you or your family. There is also the thought that if you don't exercise, your loved one will get hit by a car or die. This can be a signal that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Exercise too much behavior

There are some fundamental differences that can be used as references related to healthy exercise with sports that tend to be excessive. The characteristics of a healthy sport include the following:

  • Exercise is part of your weekly routine.
  • Your exercise helps relieve stress.
  • You feel a little upset if you don't become a sport due to something else.
  • You can accept that breaks and time outs from sports are sometimes needed.

Meanwhile, the characteristics of excessive exercise or exercise compulsion include the following:

  • You prioritize exercise more than more important things, such as work, family, friends, and even sleep time alone.
  • Your exercise is triggered by stress.
  • You feel anxiety and guilt by just thinking that you miss training.
  • You feel the need to exercise when you are sick or injured.

If you experience symptoms of sports addiction as above, don't let it drag on. Some of the simplest things you can do are:

  • Talk to trusted people about how much you exercise.
  • Try exercises to take care of yourself and find something you like to do, which doesn't involve sports.
  • Moderate physical activity of 30 minutes per day is enough to prevent diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. Some people with sports addiction think that running for 2 hours makes them 4 times healthier, but that is not true.
  • Too much exercise can lead to injury, excessive fatigue, depression, and suicide. Can also cause physical damage in the long run.

Of course, after understanding the above, you have recognized the characteristics and dangers of excessive exercise. Don't let this condition continue. Consult your doctor if you feel disturbed or if you have received complaints from others.
