Signs of Multiple Personality Disorders

People who have multiple personalities sometimes do not realize that they have abnormalities. One sign and symptom that can indicate that a person has multiple personality traits is feeling like being possessed when personality will change, some people describe this condition as possessed.

The many personalities that arise in a person are adaptive responses to extraordinary pain, fear, and trauma. This is similar to a self-defense mechanism.

Each personality in multiple personality disorders has a different identity from each other. Every personality has a different mindset, way of speaking, behavior, gender, and age. Each personality can hold complete control over the body of the sufferer in turn. Patients feel that there are other people living on their bodies.

Other signs of multiple personality disorders are:

  • Memory deviations

Patients often forget important dates in their lives, such as date of birth, date of birth of the child, or date of marriage. This forgetfulness is considered far more severe than normal forgetfulness. Patients also often do not remember the reason when they are somewhere.

  • Feel foreign with people around

The person is called someone else with the name A, even though he feels his name is B. Besides that he feels he does not recognize the people around him when his personality changes.

  • Have a psychological disorder

Multiple personality sufferers often feel disturbed by the condition that they suffer so that other psychological disorders appear, such as panic or excessive anxiety. Mood often changes like often feeling sad, angry, feeling worthless, even feeling suicidal. Eating and sleeping disorders can also be experienced by multiple personality sufferers.

  • Symptoms of depersonalization

This sign can be described as a sensation like watching or seeing yourself when another personality replaces someone's original character. People who experience these symptoms seem helpless and can only see when their bodies are replaced by other personalities. When feeling these symptoms, people with multiple personalities can also find it difficult to recognize reality.

Signs of multiple personality disorders are often equated with schizophrenia, even though these two disorders are far different. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder which is one of the main symptoms often hallucinating, namely seeing or hearing things that are not real. People with schizophrenia do not experience multiple personalities.

What is the difference with schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a mental illness that includes the condition of chronic psychosis. People with schizophrenia usually often hear or see things that are not real (hallucinations) and believe something that is unfounded (delusions).

Contrary to people's views, schizophrenics do not have multiple personalities. Delusions are a common psychotic symptom, and hallucinations that occur specifically hear the sounds experienced by schizophrenics. But there is one similarity between these two diseases, there is the risk of suicide that is higher than other mental illnesses.

Examination and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorders

Signs and symptoms of multiple personality disorders need to be ascertained not because of the effects of drugs such as drugs, alcohol, or certain diseases such as epilepsy or brain tumors.

To ensure a multiple personality diagnosis, the patient needs to be examined by a psychiatrist or doctor. This check includes a physical examination, a psychiatric medical evaluation, and investigations such as blood or urine tests to detect possible abuse of certain drugs or substances.

In addition, so far there has been no treatment that can specifically cure multiple personalities. Handling that is generally recommended is through a combination of psychological therapies, including psychotherapy or counseling and behavioral therapy, along with the administration of drugs. Because this multiple personality disorder is often accompanied by other psychiatric problems, such as depression and anxiety, antidepressant drugs and sedatives may be prescribed to control symptoms.

The response of each person with multiple personalities varies, but generally therapy can help treat symptoms if done regularly. Therapy also acts to prevent the emergence of psychological problems and behaviors related to multiple personality disorders.

People with multiple personalities may find it difficult to maintain relationships with those around them, can hurt themselves, hurt others, or abuse drugs. The therapy that will be carried out by the patient will focus so that the sufferer is comfortable dealing with other people and prevents the sufferer from doing dangerous things.
