Healthy Lifestyle for Preventing Cervical Spondylosis

The more you get older, the more problems or diseases you can experience, one of which is cervical spondylosis. Maybe you rarely hear it, but it turns out the problem of neck pain and pain is experienced by many elderly people.

What is cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is a condition in which the bones, discs and neck joints wear out due to the influence of age or aging. As you get older, the discs in the cervical bone will shrink, lose fluid, and become stiff, causing cervical spondylosis.

Cervical spondylosis or also called cervical osteoarthritis can cause pain and stiffness in the neck in some people. However, maybe not everyone will experience these symptoms.

In rare cases, this cervical problem can also cause nerve clamping. This can cause you to experience pain, tingling, and numbness in the hands, tingling and numbness in the legs, loss of coordination, difficulty walking, and loss of control of bladder or intestinal movements.




According to the Mayo Clinic, more than 85% of people who are elderly (over 60 years) experience the condition of cervical osteoarthritis. As you get older, cervical osteoarthritis can get worse. For those who have it, you can vary the form of training as follows:

1. Light exercise

Maintaining activity will help speed up recovery, even if you have to modify some exercises due to neck pain. People who walk every day tend to experience neck and lower back pain.

2. Take Pain Relief

Free-selling pain relievers. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), naproxen sodium (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) are often sufficient to control the pain associated with cervical spondylosis.

3. Compressing

Good with hot or cold temperatures. Applying a hot towel or ice to the neck can relieve neck muscles.

4. Use a Soft Neck Support

The clamp allows the neck muscles to rest. However, neck support should be worn only for a short period of time because it can eventually weaken the neck muscles. Treatment for cervical spondylosis depends on the severity of the signs and symptoms. The goal of treatment is to relieve pain, help maintain the usual activities carried out as much as possible, and prevent permanent injury to the spinal cord and nerves.

Generally, some medications taken to relieve symptoms of cervical spondylosis are:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Corticosteroids

Giving short oral prednisone can help ease pain. If the pain is severe, steroid injections can help.

Muscle relaxants

Certain drugs, such as cyclobenzaprine, can help relieve muscle spasms in the neck.

Anti-seizure medication

Some epilepsy drugs, such as gabapentin (Neurontin, Horizant) and pregabalin (Lyrica), can relieve pain in damaged nerves.

Antidepressants

Certain antidepressant drugs have been found to help relieve neck pain from cervical spondylosis.

A physical therapist can teach you exercises to help stretch and strengthen the muscles in the neck and shoulders.

If conservative treatment fails or neurological signs and symptoms, such as weakness in the arm or leg are worsening. You may need surgery to create more space for the spinal cord and nerve roots. Surgery may very well involve removing disk herniation or bone spurs, removing parts of the spine, and using bone grafts and hardware.
