High cholesterol signs and prevention efforts

Cholesterol is a substance that can be created in the liver or obtained from animal dish. High levels in the body can harm health. As a preventive measure, identify cholesterol high in the following way.

Cholesterol is the fat that flows in the blood with proteins. The combination of both is called lipoprotein. There are two lipoproteins based on its density of high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL).

HDL is also known as good cholesterol, while LDL is known as bad cholesterol. HDL is responsible for bringing cholesterol from cells back to the liver, where they will be broken down and removed from the body.

While LDL duty brings cholesterol to cells that need it. Even so, high amounts of LDL can accumulate in artery walls and cause disease.

Cholesterol Function

Cholesterol has three main functions in the body ie

  • Helps the production of sexual hormones
  • Helps the production of bile by the liver.
  • Build body tissues

Although it has significant function for the body, too much cholesterol can actually cause various diseases to complications such as chest pain, stroke, to heart attack.

What are the causes and signs of high cholesterol?

High cholesterol is affected by several factors and conditions. Some of them are

  • High blood pressure
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Obesity
  • Lifestyle is off
  • Smoke
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

Have relatives or relatives of high cholesterol

Although the cause is known, high cholesterol does not show any symptoms or signs. Cholesterol rises slowly and shows only the reaction when the amount has accumulated long to form plaque in the lining of the artery wall.

The plaque will constrict the arteries so that only a small amount of blood can flow through it. This condition can cause a heart attack or stroke.

But in some special cases, high cholesterol can be marked by the appearance of a yellow lump above or below the skin surface.

This condition is called familial hypercholesterolemia which is a hereditary disease in which the patient has cholesterol levels of 300mg / dL or more.

How To Prevent High Cholesterol

Because they have no symptoms, a high effort is to check cholesterol levels regularly. Where someone over 20 years checks every five years.

Cholesterol levels can only be known through blood tests called lipid panels. In this test, the patient will be asked to fast at least 12 hours in advance. Then, the patient's blood sample will be taken and analyzed.

Data test results are divided into four criteria that is total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. A person is called healthy when his total cholesterol is less than 200 mg / dL and is called over the limit when his total cholesterol is over 240 mg / dL

While the normal levels of HDL, LDL, and triglycerides were 60mg / dL or more, less than 100mg / dL, and less than 150 mg / dL, respectively. LDL levels are called high when more than 160mg / L and HDL levels are called low when less than 40mg / dL

In addition, you can also prevent high cholesterol through lifestyle changes such as the following

  • Limit the amount of animal fat intake
  • Apply a low-salt diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and fruits
  • Lose weight and maintain a healthy weight
  • Diligently exercise at least 30 minutes per day
  • Quit smoking

In general, the high cholesterol sign does not exist. Even so, risk factors ranging from less healthy lifestyles to certain diseases are known. So that prevention efforts can be done.
