How to Prevent and Treat Cavities to Avoid Various Diseases

Cavities are one of the common dental problems. Although it sounds trivial, cavities that don't get treated can cause a variety of adverse effects on health. Therefore, know how to prevent it.

Cavities are caused by a combination of various factors, namely the development of bacteria in the mouth, the habit of consuming sweet foods and drinks, and the hygiene of teeth and mouth that are not well maintained.

How to Prevent Cavities

To prevent cavities, you need to maintain cleanliness and healthy teeth and mouth. The trick is to:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day

The most basic thing you need to do to prevent cavities is to get used to brushing your teeth twice a day, ie morning and evening before bed. If necessary, you can also brush your teeth after eating sweet foods. The goal is so that there is no leftover food stuck to the teeth so that the risk for natural cavities can be reduced.

  • Cleaning with dental floss

1. Salt

Yes, you can use salt to treat cavities. Salt contains antiseptic and antibacterial properties. You can use salt water as a mouthwash to reduce inflammation and pain, overcome infections, and prevent the development of bacteria in the mouth. Here's how to use it:

  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle the solution until it has swept all parts of your mouth for one minute. Also, focus on rinsing the area where there are cavities. You can do this treatment 3 times a day until the symptoms subside (if accompanied by tooth pain).
  • Another way that can be done is by mixing ½ teaspoon of salt and lemon juice. Apply the mixture while massaging the gums for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water afterward. Repeat this treatment 2 times a day for several days to kill bacteria

2. Garlic

Garlic can function as an antibacterial and is highly recommended to treat cavities. Also, garlic can reduce the pain that comes from cavities and makes your gums and teeth healthier. How to apply it:

  • Provide 3 to 4 cloves of garlic and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Apply to cavities or infected teeth, leave up to 10 minutes. Then, gargle with mouthwash. You can do this twice a day for several weeks to reduce the spread of cavities.
  • If you experience pain in the area with holes, you can also rub garlic oil to relieve pain.
  • One of the easiest things to do is to eat raw garlic. It is also believed to provide effective results.

3. Licorice

According to research published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Natural Products, licorice is believed to have benefits for dental health. How to apply it by crushing turmeric into powder, or you can look for turmeric powder in the store. Leave for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water. Alternatively, mix ½ turmeric powder with a little mustard oil, then apply while massaging your teeth and gums. Leave for 10 minutes, then spit out the mixture.

5. Cloves

Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antibacterial properties make clove an important ingredient for treating dental problems. Not only that, but cloves are also able to reduce pain and prevent the spread of cavities. Here are the ways you can try:

Dissolve 2 to 3 drops of clove oil with ¼ teaspoon of sesame seed oil. Dip a cotton swab in the solution and pat the cavities. Do this treatment at night before going to bed.

Another alternative that can be done is to chew the entire clove until it is extracted into the oil. Leave the clove under your tongue for a few minutes.

6. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a technique to rinse with oil. Ayurvedic medicine - derived from Indian culture - has been used centuries ago. The benefits offered are oral detoxification. You can use coconut oil, sesame seed oil or olive oil. The trick is:

  • Take one tablespoon of one of the oils recommended above
  • Use to rinse for about 20 minutes
  • Spit (don't swallow oil)
  • Clean your mouth with warm water, you can also mix salt in water
  • Then brush your teeth as usual
  • Should be done in the morning, when the stomach is still empty

Poor oral health and the presence of cavities can increase the risk of stroke. This is because the immune system's response to infections of the teeth and gums can cause inflammation which will make the blood clot more easily, thereby increasing the risk of blockages in the arteries.

Dental hygiene and health need to be maintained early to avoid cavities and several health problems that result. Remember, fixing cavities and problems will be far more difficult and more expensive than treating it.
