How to use Aromatherapy for Maximum Benefit

Aromatherapy is believed to help improve mood, to be able to improve health both physically and mentally. Besides being burned, there are various ways to use aromatherapy to get maximum benefits.

At present, aromatherapy is widely used as an alternative treatment for various health conditions. Starting from stress, digestive problems, insomnia, depression, and others. No wonder if it's getting easier and easier for you to find various aromatherapy products that are said to be beneficial for the body.

What is Aromatherapy?

For more than 5000 years, aromatherapy has been trusted among various cultures throughout the world. It is believed that aromatherapy is a natural healer that can function as an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, while providing an anti-pain effect.

Aromatherapy is an alternative therapy for maintaining a healthy body, by utilizing essential oil fragrances. Aromatherapy oils come from plant extracts, such as roses, jasmine, cananga, lavender, chamomile, rosemary, mint, tea tree oil, ginger, lemon, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and cinnamon.




According to a number of studies, several types of essential oils have been shown to have positive effects to improve one's physical and emotional condition.

How Aromatherapy Works

Aromatherapy works by stimulating the nerves of the nose and brain. When we breathe in essential oil vapors, the aroma will enter the nasal cavity and stimulate the nervous system in the brain which plays a role in regulating emotions.

The aroma of essential oils will stimulate the hypothalamus area in the brain to produce serotonin which can improve mood. Not only that, aromatherapy is also able to stimulate the nervous system that regulates heart rate, blood pressure, stress response, and breathing.

If used by smearing, molecules from essential oils can cause certain effects, such as anti-itching on the skin or pain in the joints. But sometimes, the effects caused are negative, such as irritation or inflammation.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

A number of studies show that aromatherapy has several health benefits, including:

  • Make the body and mind relaxed.
  • Improve sleep quality and help relieve insomnia.
  • Relieve pain, such as menstrual pain, pain due to kidney stones, or pain in osteoarthritis.
  • Helps reduce stress.
  • Fight bacteria, viruses and fungi if applied to the skin.
  • Improve immunity.
  • Streamlining digestion.
  • Relieve anxiety when giving birth.
  • Relieves headaches and migraines.
  • Relieves nausea.

However, aromatherapy cannot be used as the main treatment for treating diseases. The various benefits of aromatherapy mentioned above are as additional or alternative treatments.

In addition, the effectiveness and safety of aromatherapy use still needs to be proven and further investigated.

Various Ways to Use Aromatherapy

To get the benefits, there are several ways to use aromatherapy that you can choose, namely:

Inhaling aromatherapy vapors

Inhaling aromatherapy vapors, especially eucalyptus oil, is believed to relieve cold symptoms and stuffy nose. The trick, mix 1-2 drops of aromatherapy oil into a basin of warm water, then bend your head over the basin and cover it with a towel. Breathe the steam that comes out of the warm water, for 5-10 or if you don't want to bother, you can breathe the cotton bud that has been given 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil.

Using a diffuser

An aromatherapy diffuser is a device used to convert aromatherapy oil into steam and spread it throughout the room. There are various types of diffuser, both from ceramics (stove) with wax, or using electric power.

Make sure this aromatherapy diffuser is not used for a long time at home, especially if one of the residents is pregnant or has a certain medical condition.

For bathing

Soaking in warm water added with a few drops of aromatherapy oil can relieve stress. You can use essential oils of lavender, bergamot, lemongrass, rose, lemon or orange.

For massage

When massaging the body, you can mix aromatherapy oil with massage oil. Besides making the body relax, this oil mixture can also reduce menstrual cramps and relieve menopausal symptoms.

But in some people, aromatherapy oil can cause allergies and irritation to the skin. So, avoid using aromatherapy oil excessively, and make sure the oil has been diluted or mixed with other oils.

Also keep in mind, do not apply aromatherapy oil to body parts that are bruised, rash, swollen or injured.

Body care products

There are various body care products, such as lotions or scrubs, which contain essential oils. Some essential oils are also produced specifically to be applied directly to the skin, to scent the body.

Even though it has many benefits, aromatherapy also has risks. So, make sure you understand well how to use it. If you have certain medical conditions, it is advisable to consult a doctor before using aromatherapy.
