Lower the Risk of Heart Disease by Drinking Tea

Heart disease is the number one killer, in the world. Maintaining a proper diet can be one way to keep away from the disease. Well, so far, many say that drinking tea is good for heart health. Is that right?

Tea and heart disease

On average, risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and high cholesterol are associated with lifestyle and can be prevented. Therefore, recommendations for modifying a healthy lifestyle have been echoed to reduce the incidence of heart disease. One of the healthy lifestyles studied can reduce the risk of heart disease by drinking tea.

Several studies have explored the effect of drinking tea on heart disease. A 2016 study found that consuming tea can slow the progression of atherosclerotic plaque formation in coronary arteries.

The study involved 6,500 people from different ethnicities, and found that those who consumed at least one cup of tea per day had a lower incidence of coronary heart disease than those who did not consume tea daily. Allegedly, the content of flavonoids - powerful antioxidants in tea - is responsible for this.




There is also research in Japan that found that consumption of tea can reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides. The study involving more than 40,000 people found that those who consumed more than 5 cups of green tea a day had a 26% lower risk of dying from a heart attack than those who drank less than one cup of green tea a day.

Although in these studies no reported side effects from drinking too much tea, experts recommend that you do not consume more than 5 cups of tea per day. This is not without reason, because tea is known to contain tannins which can bind iron and zinc, making it difficult to absorb by the body. In addition, green tea is also high in oxalate which can cause kidney stone formation.

However, if consumed in the right amount, tea can be beneficial to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Another way to reduce the risk of heart disease

There are two types of heart disease risk factors, namely risk factors that cannot be changed (gender, age, heredity) and can be changed (lifestyle). The following lifestyle changes can help reduce heart disease risk factors.

Smoke

Chemicals in cigarettes can damage the heart and blood vessel walls, which in turn can cause plaques that clog arteries. The atherosclerosis plaque can lead to a heart attack. Smoking as little as anything will still increase your risk of heart disease, even though the more you smoke, the higher the risk of heart attack.

Manage cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure

High cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension are important risk factors for heart disease. This disease can be prevented by maintaining a diet and exercise.

Control stress

Today's demands for a lifestyle are vulnerable to stress for many people. As you know, stress is also associated with heart disease. However, you can still control the condition, namely with stress management. You can listen to soothing music, watch comedy movies, meditate, or consult a psychologist.

To maximize the benefits of tea in reducing the risk of heart disease, consume enough or no more than 5 cups per day. Also change your lifestyle that is still messy and apply it consistently so that you avoid heart disease.
