Negative Effects of Orthorexia on Health

Eating healthy food is fine. However, being obsessed with it can backfire which leads to eating disorders called orthorexia. Be careful, there are many negative effects of this eating disorder on the health of the body.

People who experience orthorexia usually pay close attention to the purity of the food they consume and an obsession with the benefits of healthy eating. It's just that this obsession can actually lead to malnutrition. How can this be so?

The causes can vary. People who experience this disorder usually have perfectionist tendencies, high anxiety, or feel they have a need to control something. But, despite consuming healthy food, it turns out orthorexia has a negative effect that is quite dangerous.

Negative effects of orthorexia

The negative effects of eating disorders are divided into 3 major problems, namely:

1. Physical effects

2. Psychological effects

This condition will further complicate the social interaction of people who experience orthorexia with their environment. Unfortunately, their habits are considered common for people who suffer from orthorexia themselves.

How to deal with orthorexia

As mentioned above, the problem caused by orthorexia is as severe as that which comes from other eating disorders. If not treated quickly, this can cause permanent damage to health.

The first step to dealing with orthorexia is to identify its presence, which is to know whether a person has orthorexia or not. However, this stage can be a serious challenge. Because individuals who have this disorder often do not realize it.

The best way to find out is that patients should confess to themselves that they have orthorexia, by looking at the symptoms. That way, everything becomes clear. Then, someone with an eating disorder must get help, not only from a doctor, but from a psychologist and dietitian.

General treatments that can be done to treat people who experience orthorexia include explanations regarding prevention, behavior modification, cognitive restructuring, and various forms of relaxation training.

However, the effectiveness of this type of treatment has not been confirmed scientifically. However, there's nothing wrong with you doing it.
