1. Cataracts

3. Age-related macular degeneration

This disease attacks the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see something in detail. It can interfere with the ability to read, drive a vehicle, watch television, and perform daily activities.

4. Non-corrected refractive disorder

Nearsightedness (Myopia), farsightedness, and uncorrected cylindrical eyes can cause blindness. One of the concerns is myopia. This condition can grow rapidly in childhood. This disorder is more risky in children who read more than two books a week, and just spend a little time playing outdoors.

5. Diabetic retinopathy

As the name suggests, this condition is caused by diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy affects the retina, the eye tissue that is sensitive to light and is behind the eyes.

The research team at Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Australia, conducted data collection on more than 2,856 Australian adults aged 49 years, over a 15-year period.

The data were drawn from the Blue Mountains Eye Study, one of the largest epidemiological studies in the world published in 1992. This includes information about factors such as lifestyle and participant disease that they already have.

Eating at least one orange daily is associated with a decrease in overall risk of developing macular degeneration 15 years later to 60 percent. The study, published in the journal "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition", believes that flavonoids contained in oranges can help prevent various diseases. For information, flavonoids are powerful antioxidants found in most fruits and vegetables that have antiinflammatory properties.

"Even eating oranges once a week seems to offer significant benefits," said Bamini Gopinath, lead author of the study and professor of epidemiology at the University of Sydney, Australia.

That oranges (and other citrus fruits) are rich in vitamin C which is essential for eye health.

Vitamin C helps maintain the condition of the blood vessels present in the eye, and prevents various degenerative eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Orange also contains lutein and zeaxanthin which are also important for eye health.

Oranges fruits can indeed be one way to maintain eye health and avoid blindness. However, you still have to maintain eye health by eating a balanced nutritious diet, exercise regularly, and avoid bad habits that damage the eyes. In addition, check with your eye doctor regularly is equally important.
