Oolong Tea, Can Reduce Breast Cancer Risk?

In the past, scientists have studied the potential benefits of green tea for breast cancer. They found that certain components of green tea have an anti-cancer effect. The new study tries to analyze other types of tea, one of which is oolong tea, and see that oolong can also be used to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells.

One study published in the medical journal Anticancer Research tried to learn more about the benefits of oolong tea. One of them is to reduce the risk of cancer.

Research led by Chunfa Huang, PhD , research professor in internal medicine from Saint Louis University in Missouri, studied the effects of oolong tea extract on six cell groups, which included ER-positive, PR-positive, HER2-positive, and negative triple breast cancer cells. Then, the cells are exposed to varying concentrations of green tea, oolong tea and black tea.

From the results of the study, Huang and his team found that green tea extract and oolong tea stopped the growth of all types of breast cancer. The researchers concluded that besides green tea, oolong tea can also cause DNA damage from cancer cells, and thus play a role in inhibiting the growth and multiplication of cancer cells.




However, further research is still needed to confirm the results obtained from the study.

Oolong tea drinkers and breast cancer risk

According to information from the annual cancer register data in China and in Fujian province, it was found that individuals living in the province were 35 percent less likely to develop breast cancer and 38 percent less likely to die from the condition compared to the national average.

Huang also noted that oolong tea, like green tea, can provide additional benefits for regular drinkers. Such as lowering cholesterol, abdominal fat, and may even offer protection against other types of cancer.

In the second part of his study, Huang compared health statistics in China's provinces, where oolong tea is a popular drink compared to areas where people usually drink less oolong tea.

Interestingly, it was also found that individuals who consumed oolong tea routinely were 25 percent less likely to develop breast cancer compared to the average incidence rate in Fujian province and 50 percent lower for this condition when compared with the national average incidence rate.

Another way to reduce the risk of breast cancer

Research shows that lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of breast cancer, even though these women are at high risk. To reduce risk, consistently apply the following:

  • Limit alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of breast cancer to develop.
  • Do not smoke. Evidence shows an association between smoking and breast cancer risk.
  • Weight control. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. Especially if this obesity occurs after menopause.
  • Physically active. Adequate physical activity can help manage weight, and this helps prevent breast cancer. Healthy adults are recommended for moderate intensity aerobic exercise for 150 minutes per week or high intensity aerobics for 75 minutes per week.
  • Breastfeeding is considered to play a role in the prevention of breast cancer. The longer you feed your child, the greater the effect of this protection.
  • Avoid radiation exposure and environmental pollution. Although more studies are needed, several studies have captured the connection between breast cancer and accumulated radiation exposure throughout your life.

Like green tea, oolong tea can play a role in inhibiting the growth, multiplication, and progression of breast cancer cells. The lower incidence of breast cancer in areas with higher consumption of oolong tea indicates that this one drink has good potential as one of the anticancer agents. However, further research is needed to really ensure the effect.
