Baking soda is generally used as an ingredient in cake dough, and often used as a medicine. But who would have thought, behind all the benefits, it turns out there are a number of dangers of baking soda for health.

Baking soda is an additional food ingredient that contains sodium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate chemicals.

Medically, baking soda is often used for:

  • Neutralize stomach acid quickly. Therefore, baking soda can be used to treat stomach ulcers and stomach acid.
  • Neutralizing blood pH that is too acidic or as a treatment for acidosis.
  • Boost energy and physical performance so as not to get tired quickly. This one baking soda effect is widely used by athletes.
  • Maintain clean and healthy teeth and mouths.
  • Cleanse and deal with minor irritations on the skin.

The danger of Baking Soda

Although it can be used to treat certain diseases, baking soda or sodium bicarbonate can also be harmful to health if used excessively or for long periods of time.




Eating large amounts of baking soda or in the long term can cause side effects in the form of:

  • Indigestion, such as constipation, stomach ache, and diarrhea.
  • Seizures
  • Disorders of the nerves and brain.
  • Electrolyte disorders, such as hypernatremia, hypokalemia, and hypochloremia.
  • Worsening kidney disease and heart failure.
  • Disorders of acid-base blood balance, namely acidosis and alkalosis.
  • Muscle weakness and muscle cramps.
  • Increased gastric acid production.

Baking soda is also considered dangerous if too often used as skincare. Some side effects of using baking soda on the skin are dry or wrinkled skin, acne gets worse, and irritation and inflammation in the skin.

In addition, baking soda used to whiten teeth can also be dangerous if used for a long time, because it can cause tooth loss.

Things to Look For Before Using Cake Soda

Given the dangers of baking soda for health, people with certain conditions are encouraged to avoid foods, drinks, supplements, or medicines containing baking soda. These conditions include:

  • Has a history of kidney disease and congestive heart failure.
  • It has high levels of potassium, sodium, chlorine, and calcium.
  • It has a higher body pH than normal (alkalosis).
  • Allergy to sodium bicarbonate.
  • Pregnant women.

Giving sodium bicarbonate for treatment in children under 6 years is also not recommended, except with a doctor's consultation and prescription.

In general, the use of baking soda is still considered safe while its use is not excessive and not for a long time. Therefore, to avoid the dangers of baking soda for health, use it wisely according to the doctor's dosage and advice.
