Pregnant Women, don't underestimate sinusitis

In fact, there are many body changes that occur when entering pregnancy. Yes, from the symptoms of morning sickness, back pain, to feeling tired. Even not infrequently pregnant women experience sinusitis. Although not too severe, symptoms of sinusitis in pregnant women can be very disturbing.

Sinusitis is inflammation that occurs in the sinus wall. Sinusitis can occur during pregnancy, in any trimester. Although not too severe, but symptoms of sinusitis in pregnant women can be very uncomfortable and this condition should not be underestimated.

Sinus is a small cavity behind the forehead and cheekbones that contain air. There are four pairs of sinuses in the human head, behind the forehead, on both sides of the nose, behind the eyes, and behind the cheekbones.

Sinus produces mucus which serves to maintain the temperature and humidity of the air that enters the lungs, and prevents disease-causing germs from entering the respiratory tract. This mucous liquid will flow through a small channel in the sinus cavity. If the channel is inflamed, there will be a blockage and mucous fluid cannot flow normally. This condition can trigger sinusitis.

Symptoms and causes of sinusitis that pregnant women should watch out for

The causes of sinusitis during pregnancy can be caused by:

  • Swelling in the blood vessels and membranes in the nose
  • Changes in the hormone progesterone during pregnancy
  • Viral, bacterial or fungal infections
  • Allergy history

 

Sinusitis in pregnant women can occur in any trimester, first, second or third. Actually, sinusitis is an infection that occurs in the lining of the air-filled sac located around the face and nose (sinuses). This sinus inflammation will cause some symptoms in pregnant women, namely:




 

Acute sinus infection can last for four weeks, while chronic infection can last more than 12 weeks. Sinusitis during pregnancy can be triggered by a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection. In some cases, sinus infections are a complication of the common cold. Pregnant women are also at high risk for sinus infections if they have allergies.

When to go to the doctor?

Sinus infection can actually heal itself with home care. But there are times, cases of sinusitis in pregnant women should immediately be taken to the doctor. Reported on the American Pregnancy page, if some of this happens, you should immediately return to the doctor to get proper treatment.

  • If your cough is accompanied by green or yellow phlegm
  • If your body temperature is more than 38.3 degrees Celsius
  • If you can't eat or sleep

If your infection doesn't improve, your doctor will prescribe a special medication. Your doctor will give you the best medicine that is safe for you and your baby. Untreated sinus infection conditions can increase the risk of complications such as meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain).

Types of sinusitis that occur during pregnancy

There are two types of sinusitis during pregnancy, namely:

  1. Acute sinusitis. In acute sinusitis, inflammation of the sinuses that occur is temporary, which usually occurs when cold or allergic air.
  2. Chronic sinusitis. This type of sinusitis occurs within a few weeks or months.

Sinusitis during pregnancy is actually not dangerous. However, if left unchecked without getting treatment, this can interfere with your pregnancy.

Overcome sinusitis while pregnant by taking these steps

Here are some ways pregnant women can do at home to deal with sinusitis during pregnancy:

  • Keep the humidity in the room. To reduce sinusitis complaints, use a humidifier in the room. This helps the air entering the respiratory tract remain moist, so as to prevent nasal congestion and speed up the healing process.
  • Use saline liquid. Saline liquid helps you clean your nose, can be a liquid or nasal spray.
  • Elevate the position of the pillow while sleeping. Use a few pillows so that when you sleep your head position is higher. This can reduce complaints that occur when sinusitis is happening because you avoid collecting mucus fluid in the sinus cavity while sleeping at night.
  • Bathing with warm water when sinusitis persists can help relieve breathing.
  • Adequate nutrition with healthy and nutritious food, so that it can help increase immunity during pregnancy. Not only that, you are protected from the threat of disease.
  • Sufficient body fluids. Fulfill the need for fluids by drinking water capable of thinning mucus in the respiratory tract.

 

One of the causes of sinusitis is infection in the respiratory tract and allergies. To prevent sinusitis, including pregnant women, take precautions. You can use a nose mask in a public area, regularly wash your hands using soap and running water, and avoid the habit of touching the mouth and nose area when hands are dirty.
