Recognize 4 Causes of Food Poisoning and Bacteria Causes

Food poisoning is a health disorder triggered by contaminated food and beverages. Germs that easily transmit diseases such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the most common causes of food poisoning. They can spread on food when the presentation is not good, for example, cooked undercooked.

The most common signs and symptoms of food poisoning are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, weakness, and diarrhea. Usually, it can occur immediately for several hours after eating food.

To prevent food poisoning, first know the causes of poisoning that are common but rarely realized:

1. Food is not in the right temperature

Perishable foods can be a cause of food poisoning. Perishable food is a type of food that is easily damaged, decayed, or becomes unsafe for consumption if it is not put into the refrigerator. Examples of this type of food are eggs and dairy products, meat, poultry, and some fruits and vegetables.




If you want to remove the food from the refrigerator, do it for only two hours. And if the weather is hot, cut the time to just one hour.

2. Wear the same cutting board for meat and vegetables

The cutting board for meat should be different from the cutting board for vegetables. This aims to avoid cross-contamination that can harm your health. Don't forget to separate the storage of raw food and cooked food in the refrigerator.

3. Drinking less clean water

Avoid drinking water from a place that is not clean because of the high risk of bacterial contamination. If you are on vacation, for example to an unfamiliar area, prepare a drug or probiotic supplement. Eating the wrong foods can irritate the intestines.

4. Less heat for food

Do you want to heat leftover food overnight in the microwave? Make sure the temperature is really right, which is 73 degrees Celsius or more, to kill potential bacteria in it. This is because these foods can be exposed to bacteria after staying overnight in the refrigerator.

The most common bacterial cause of food poisoning

1. Salmonella

A salmonella is a group of bacteria that most often causes diarrhea due to food poisoning. Salmonella contamination is caused due to poor hygiene and improper food processing.

Some foods are known to have very high salmonella content, such as eggs, meat, and immature chicken meat. Unpasteurized milk is also at risk of having salmonella in it. Vegetables and fruits, although not naturally containing Salmonella, can be contaminated if not washed.

The effects of salmonella food poisoning can be very severe if it occurs in pregnant women, the elderly, children, and people who have low immunity.

2. Clostridium perfringens

Clostridium perfringens is a type of bacteria that is very easy and fast-growing. Babies, children, and the elderly are very susceptible to these bacteria.

Usually, this type of bacteria will only cause health problems if the amount in the body is very large. That is if the lab test states that the cause of diarrhea or your abdominal pain is due to this bacteria, the food you eat previously contained a lot of Clostridium perfringens.

Symptoms will occur 12 hours after food poisoning contaminated with Clostridium. One type of Clostridium can cause botulism, lethal food poisoning.

3. Campylobacter

Campylobacter is a bacterium that causes food contamination that can cause diarrhea. Mostly, food contamination occurs because food is not cooked properly. Cooling or freezing food does not make this type of bacteria disappear.

4. Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is actually harmless. This type of bacteria is found on the surface of the skin, nostrils, and parts of the human and animal throat. But it's another story when bacteria have moved to food. The breed will be more rapid and eventually cause infection. Symptoms caused by this infection are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cramps, to nausea and vomiting.

Foods that usually contain high Staphylococcus aureus are foods that are processed directly by hand, for example, salads, sandwiches, and various cakes and bread products.

5. Escherichia coli (E. coli)

E. coli is a group of bacteria that has several types of germs. There are several types of E. coli that can contaminate food and then cause food poisoning. Examples of foods that usually contain E. coli are non-cooked foods.

Tips to prevent food poisoning

To prevent you and your family from experiencing food poisoning, do the following tips:

  • Wash hands, cooking utensils, and food before and after handling and preparing food. Use warm water and special dishwashing soap to wash cooking and eating utensils.
  • Separate storage of raw food with cooked foods to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Make sure the cooked food is completely cooked in all parts.
  • Dispose of food if you are not sure the food is stored and prepared in a good way, smells bad, and looks inconclusive.
  • Store the meat at the bottom of the freezer so that it does not contaminate other foods.

If you have experienced food poisoning, don't panic. Food poisoning can usually be handled alone at home. In many cases, even such cases will disappear on their own for three to five days. The important thing is you must stay hydrated. High-electrolyte sports drinks can help, as well as fruit juice and coconut water. Avoid caffeine first so that digestion does not become more irritating.
