Skin cancer, Here's what you need to know about

Frequently, skin cancer occurs in skin that is often exposed to sunlight. However, skin cancer can also occur on skin that is not exposed to sunlight. Skin cancer causes the growth of skin cells to become abnormal. Lumps and lesions in the skin can appear when you have skin cancer. But sometimes, skin cancer lumps with ordinary moles are still difficult to distinguish as a characteristic of skin cancer..

There are three types of skin cancer that generally occur, namely melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (basal cell carcinoma), and squamous cell carcinoma (squamous cell carcinoma).

1. Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma usually appears in the form of small, smooth lumps like pearls in your skin, as well as cuts like brown scar tissue. Over time, these injuries or bumps can also be bloody or watery and then crusty in some areas. Usually this basal cell carcinoma characteristic occurs in areas often exposed to sunlight, such as scalp, neck, and face. Skin wounds can also appear on the chest and back.

2. Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma usually exists in the form of red and usually rough lumps, as well as skin lesions such as scales and crusts. These characteristics usually appear in areas often exposed to sunlight, such as scalp, neck, face, ears, and hands. However, people who have dark skin color usually have squamous cell carcinoma in areas rarely exposed to sunlight, such as the palms and soles of the feet.

3. Melanoma

This is a type of skin cancer that is difficult to treat. Melanoma can happen to everyone with any skin color. In people who have dark skin, melanoma usually occurs in areas of skin that are rarely exposed to sunlight, such as the palms, soles of the feet, under the fingernails, or toenails.

Not only that, melanoma can also develop anywhere, in the skin that is often or rarely exposed to sunlight, in normal skin, or in a mole that lives and develops into cancer. Melanoma most often appears on the face. In women, melanoma often occurs on the bottom of the foot.

The characteristics of melanoma skin cancer are:

  • Large brown spots on the skin

Lumps on the skin such as moles that can change color, size (usually large), and can bleed

  • Small wound with irregular borders

Dark wound on palms, soles of feet, fingertips, toes, or mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, vagina, or anus

Know the cause of skin cancer

Reporting from Prevention, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It is known that the disease can affect all ages, especially in people aged 50 years and over, light skin color, and have a family history of skin cancer.

In addition, spending a lot of time in the sun can also cause skin cancer. This happens because ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage DNA in skin cells and cause mutations. Conditions that cause cells to grow uncontrollably to form a tumor.

Not only that, the risk of skin cancer can also be higher if you have the following conditions:

  • Has red hair
  • Have lots of moles on the body
  • Living on high ground
  • Often exposed to radiation exposure

Early detection of skin cancer

Self-examination is the best way to recognize the early signs of skin cancer. You just do it once a month in front of a large mirror that can reveal a full body. In addition, use a small mirror to view areas of the body that are difficult to reach, such as the groin.

Examine all body parts, without exception, including the palms of the hands and feet, scalp, ears, nails, and back. Recognize the presence of spots, patches, or lumps that never existed before.

That not all spots, as well as new bumps arise is a symptom of skin cancer. The suspected disorder as skin cancer usually has the following properties:

  • Lumps grow larger, can be whitish, skin color, brown, black or reddish
  • Color change from previous
  • It gets thicker over time
  • Has an unambiguous boundary
  • Measuring more than 6 millimeters
  • Appears after a 21 year old
  • Easily injured and difficult to recover
  • Easy bleeding
  • Feels itchy and painful

Basically, skin cancer is the most easily recognized type of disease in its early stages. This is because the complaints that occur due to skin cancer appear from the outside. Therefore, if you feel experiencing one or more symptoms that refer to skin cancer, it could not hurt to do a medical examination to the doctor. In this way, the risks and adverse effects that may arise in the future can be prevented.
