Insomnia is generally more popular than the condition of being often sleepy and easily asleep. Hypersomnia is a condition that causes a person to be too sleepy during the day or spend too long to fall asleep. Individuals who experience hypersomnia can fall asleep at any time even when doing activities that require concentration, such as when working or driving a vehicle.

The main impact of hypersomnia is a disruption in activity, and a significant decrease in cognitive function due to drowsiness.

What are the causes of hypersomnia and how are the symptoms?

People who experience hypersomnia usually have difficulty when they wake up arriving. In this condition, the desire to sleep can occur at any time, even if you drive or do other busy work. That is why, hypersomnia is very dangerous, because it risks disrupting safety during daily activities.

There are several factors that can increase the risk of hypersomnia, including:

  • Having excess weight
  • Use of illegal drugs or alcohol

If you really experience a number of symptoms above, immediately check the condition to the doctor to get a more certain diagnosis. In addition to looking at medical history and family history, the doctor will do an epworth sleepiness scale check to assess drowsiness experienced, record the sleep agenda, do a polysomnogram to monitor brain activity to oxygen levels when you fall asleep.

The day after the polysomnogram, multiple sleep latency checks will be performed to measure sleepiness, type, and the degree of sleep experienced during napping. If the result is correct that you have hypersomnia, the doctor will provide certain stimulant treatments to help the body stay awake during the day. In addition, your doctor will also advise you to make a routine night's sleep pattern and avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Other causes of drowsiness are easy

This condition is always sleepy and easy to fall asleep, similar to the symptoms of other health problems outside of hypersomnia. If you have received an examination and the result is not hypersomnia there may be other causes of the condition.

Easy drowsiness can be caused by several things, including lack of oxygen in the brain, anemia, chronic illness, lack of exercise, hypoglycemia, and much more. Not only that, inadequate food intake that causes deficiency of certain minerals for the body can also make you easily drowsy.

How do you deal with hypersomnia?

Hypersomnia can be overcome based on the causes of hypersomnia. Secondary hypersomnia is overcome by eliminating conditions or diseases that cause hypersomnia. The use of stimulant drugs is also used to reduce drowsiness and help to stay awake.

Lifestyle changes are important in the prevention process, one of which is by forming a regular sleep schedule. Apply sleep hygiene patterns by avoiding activities that can reduce the quality of your sleep when you enter bedtime.
