The Right Way to Overcome Hyper Saliva During Pregnancy

Pregnancy makes a woman more vulnerable to various health problems. One of the most common occurrences in pregnant women is hypersaliva, which is an increase in saliva production.

Hypersaliva usually occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy and will subside at the end of the first trimester. Actually, this condition is a normal condition of the mechanism of pregnancy. Some factors that are believed to affect the occurrence of hyper saliva during pregnancy, including:

Changes in hormonal balance

During pregnancy there is an increase in levels of progesterone and estrogen in the body. This condition can cause stimulation of the salivary glands, thus producing more saliva.

Hyperemesis gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HEG) or morning sickness is a disorder in pregnant women characterized by excessive nausea and vomiting. These feelings tend to make pregnant women avoid food, so the process of swallowing becomes reduced. As a result, more saliva is retained in the mouth and hypersaliva occurs.

Acid reflux

As the fetus increases in size, the uterus will urge the gastric organs above it. This can cause stomach acid to rise into the esophagus. Furthermore, acid receptors in the esophagus will stimulate the salivary glands to produce more saliva to neutralize the increase in stomach acid.

Irritant substances

Irritants such as cigarette smoke, mercury, and pesticides are believed to trigger increased production of saliva. In addition, anticonvulsant drugs and tranquilizers are also thought to be associated with an increase in excessive saliva production.

Dental infection

Pregnant women are more at risk for cavities. Even worse, pregnant women also often experience nausea and vomiting in the first trimester so they tend to be lazy to maintain dental and oral hygiene. These conditions make pregnant women more susceptible to dental infections, which in turn triggers an increase in saliva production.

Overcome hypersaliva in this way

Hypersaliva during pregnancy can cause discomfort. Even though there is no specific therapy to deal with, you can try several of these methods at home:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day and use mouthwash 4 times a day. Choose toothpaste and mouthwash specifically for pregnant women.
  • Consume 2.5 liters of water per day.
  • Eat small portions every 2-3 hours. Chew food perfectly and slowly.
  • Avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates or starchy.
  • Avoid consuming spicy, sour and oily foods.
  • Consume liquid and dry foods such as bread or biscuits, especially when nausea and vomiting occur.
  • This can help pregnant women swallow excess saliva in the mouth.

Hypersaliva is a complaint that is influenced by a normal (physiological) mechanism during pregnancy. However, it does not rule out the possibility that the complaint can cause discomfort in pregnant women, thus affecting the condition of the pregnancy as a whole. Therefore, if these efforts have not been able to overcome the hypersaliva experienced during pregnancy, it is best to seek medical help from obstetricians and gynecologists.
