Various Nutrients Behind the Benefits of Onions

Onions are commonly used in cooking. Aside from being a flavor enhancer, there are also many benefits of onions for health. This one plant contains many nutrients and substances that are thought to affect health. No wonder the onion is often used as medicine.

When compared to garlic which has been known for its benefits, not many know the benefits of onions. Onions are plants that are commonly used as cooking ingredients. In addition to its delicious aroma, onion also turns out to contain many health benefits.

Onion Nutrition

Onions are low-calorie foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Onions contain very little saturated fat and do not contain trans fat at all.

In 100 grams of onion, there are approximately 40 calories, 1.7 grams of fiber, 4.2 grams of sugar, 1.1 grams of protein, and 9.3 grams of carbohydrates. In addition, onions also contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, folate, and potassium.

Judging from the nutritional value, onions include foods that contain dense nutrients. Onions are low in calories but high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds in them.

Benefits of Onion

Substances contained in it determine the benefits of onions for the body. Some claims of the benefits of onions are able to reduce the risk of gastric cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, lower blood pressure, and increase bone density.

Here are other benefits of onions based on research:

  • Onions are thought to be effective for removing scars. Several studies have shown that applying a gel containing onion extract for at least 10 weeks can improve the appearance of scars after surgery.
  • Folate found in onions can also reduce symptoms of depression. Folate reduces the formation of homocysteine, a compound that can prevent blood and nutrients from reaching the brain optimally.
  • Blood sugar levels of diabetics can go down by consuming 100 grams of onions every day. But this has not received sufficient evidence because there is still a lack of clinical research to prove the theory.
  • Extracts and essential oils of onions are believed to suppress bacterial growth.
  • According to research, consumption of onion is thought to increase bone density.
  • Eating onions is also claimed to reduce the risk of several types of cancer, such as cancer of the stomach, colon, and prostate. This is because antioxidants in onions act as anti-inflammatory and can reduce the risk of certain cancers.
  • Fiber in onions makes the digestive system work properly. Onions contain special types of fiber, namely soluble fiber called oligofructose. This fiber encourages the growth of good bacteria in the intestine. Oligofructose is also needed to help prevent and treat diarrhea.

But the various benefits of onions still need further research and evidence.

Rules of Onion Consumption

Although it is useful and is a natural ingredient, each person has a maximum limit for onion consumption. Although there is currently no research to establish safe levels, it is good not to overdo onions, especially in the following groups:

  • Pregnant and lactating women because there is not enough research evidence about the effects of consuming onions in large quantities.
  • In patients with blood clotting disorders and patients who will undergo surgery, onions can slow down the blood clotting process. Stop consuming onions as medicines two weeks before undergoing surgery.
  • Especially for diabetics, onions can reduce sugar levels. People with diabetes who take diabetes medications and want to use onions as alternative medicine should check their sugar levels carefully.
  • In people who are allergic to onions, taking aspirin can increase their sensitivity to this ingredient.

To get the benefits of onions, there are many ways to process them before consumption. Onions can be roasted, boiled, fried, sauteed, or eaten raw in a salad mixture. But keep in mind, eating too much onion can cause flatulence or even diarrhea. If symptoms occur or a disorder is caused by consuming too much onion, it is recommended to immediately consult a doctor.
