Wake Up More Morning Lower Breast Cancer Risk?

What time do you usually get up early? Do you include a morning person, or even the most hobby of getting up in the afternoon? According to the latest research, women who have a habit of getting up early turned out to have a lower risk of breast cancer than those who did not.

This is in line with several previous studies, which found that cancer risk is related to a person's body's biological clock and sleep pattern. Therefore, researchers who initiated the clinical trial wanted to find out more about the link between sleep patterns and cancer, and the existence of genetic factors that underlie it.

The study initiated by Dr. Rebecca Richmond, researcher with the Cancer Research UK Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Program at the University of Bristol, is gathering data from around 180,000 women. In addition to asking about the habit of getting up early, the research team also analyzed genetic variations related to sleep habits to find out more about their relationship with breast cancer.

Based on the analysis carried out, the result is women who have genes that make them tend to wake up early have a reduced risk of breast cancer by 48%. In addition, women who have a morning wake-up habit have a 40% lower risk of the same disease.




Understanding risk factors for breast cancer

In addition to sleep patterns, there are also a series of other risk factors associated with the incidence of breast cancer. According to data from the American Cancer Society, 45% of cancer deaths in the United States are related to altered risk factors, such as exposure to cigarette smoke, excessive body weight, high consumption of red meat, and low physical activity.

About 4% of cancer deaths in the United States are also associated with excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, obesity is also a cause of preventable breast cancer. And now, the quality and duration of sleep are considered as one of the risk factors for breast cancer.

Dr. Richmond said, "The findings of this study are expected to help the general public apply healthy sleep patterns to improve health levels and reduce the risk of breast cancer in women."

Then, why sleep habits can be related to breast cancer? Circadian rhythms, or biological clocks, which the body has to control functions such as sleep patterns, blood pressure, and metabolism. Therefore, if the circadian rhythm is disrupted, there can be an increased risk of cancer and other diseases.

The results of the Richmond study and the team did show a link between waking hours and the risk of breast cancer. However, it cannot be determined that there is a causal relationship between these two things, because the research conducted is an observational study.

Breast cancer is a health condition that can occur due to the interaction of many factors. Recently, one of the factors found to be related to breast cancer is waking up in the morning. According to research, getting up early is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. Nevertheless, further research is still needed to confirm these results.
