Nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline can be used to relieve nasal discomfort caused by colds and allergies. This drug is also widely used to relieve nasal congestion and swelling (congestion) in the sinuses because the effect of the work is faster than the drinking medication for stuffy nose.




Although it has a fast work effect, nasal spray medicines containing oxymetazoline are not recommended for use for children under the age of 6, unless recommended by a doctor. The way these spray works is by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages, so that swelling and blockages in the nasal cavity are reduced. The user should only be sprayed on the nose, and not to be swallowed. Usually, this spray is used every 10 to 12 hours as needed, but no more than two times per day. Do not use this spray for more than three days in a row. If symptoms do not improve after three days of treatment, contact your doctor immediately.

If you experience nasal congestion accompanied by a high fever, there is blood in the snot, or runny nose turns green, immediately see a doctor.

Additional Tips to Relieve Nasal Congestion

When experiencing nasal congestion, an important thing that you need to pay attention to is also to maintain the humidity of the nasal passages and sinuses. The following are easy steps to relieve nasal congestion:

1. Drink lots of fluids.

Fluid can help thin mucus and may prevent sinus congestion. In addition, consuming lots of fluids can also keep your throat moist.

2. Frequent urination.

It is important to do this regularly if your nose is blocked, but do it right. Removing snot with too much pressure can bring germs back to your ears. The best way to get rid of a runny nose is to close the airflow with your finger in one nostril when your runny nose with the other hole.

3. Inhale warm steam.

Add water to the pan, then cook until boiling. Lift and then inhale slowly the warm steam produced from the boiling water. But be careful when practicing this because the steam can make your nose blister. In addition to this method, you can also enjoy warm steam while taking a warm bath. Not only does it relieve nasal congestion, but a warm bath can also make your body relax.

4. Wash your nose with saltwater.

Besides being able to relieve nasal congestion, this method can also eliminate viruses and bacteria that are inside the nose. You can make a saltwater solution at home. The ingredients are three teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of baking soda. Mix both ingredients together, then store them in an airtight container. To make the solution, take one teaspoon of the mixture, then add 230 ml of warm water. Fill this solution into the syringe or neti pot. Then, lean toward the sink while tilting your head. Pour this solution into one of the nostrils. Leave until the solution flows out of the other nostrils. During this process, you can breathe using your mouth.

5. Take hot drinks.

Hot drinks can relieve nasal congestion, soothe inflamed membranes and prevent dehydration. The hot drink that you can try is herbal tea mixed with one teaspoon of honey. This step is very helpful when you have trouble breathing when sleeping at night.

6. Sleep with extra pillows.

This method might help make you sleep better. Sleeping with two pillows under your head can help relieve congestion.

7. Garlic Consumption

Eating garlic can help you overcome a blocked nose. Because the garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties that are good for removing congested noses due to flu. The recommended way to consume garlic is to chew it directly. But if you feel reluctant to chew it directly, you can mix garlic with the food you consume every day.
