What Happens to Your Body After Childbirth?

Childbirth is a special event experienced by a woman. Behind that, it is not uncommon for women to be surprised by the changes that occur in their bodies after giving birth.

During labor, the body carries out a series of processes that will drain energy. After the process is complete, the body will begin to adjust to recovery. However, don't be surprised if you then feel something unusual.

Recognizing Possible Changes

Most women who give birth for the first time don't expect to have to face many different things on their bodies. Following are some changes to body parts that might be experienced:

1. Vagina & urinary tract

After giving birth, you may feel changes like a stretchy and more sensitive vagina. In addition, your intimate part will begin to expel fluid, which consists mainly of blood for several weeks. If you do not breastfeed, your menstrual schedule will return to normal around 7-9 weeks after giving birth. But if you are breastfeeding, it is normal if you will not get your period for the next few months.

What is also often complained about is the difficulty of holding back urination after giving birth or post-partum incontinence. This happens because the labor process weakens the pelvic floor muscles, so the bladder becomes overactive. To help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, you can do Kegel exercises. Avoid excessive sports movements and especially lifting heavy loads.

About 3-4 weeks after giving birth, you can return to sexual intercourse. But if you are breastfeeding, there is a possibility that the vagina feels dry, making you uncomfortable. If necessary, use vaginal lubricants that can help penetrate when you have intercourse.

2. Stomach

Not infrequently, women who think, the stomach will immediately return to normal size after giving birth. Right, but it will take time. It takes about 1.5-2 months before the uterus returns to its size before becoming pregnant.

If there are reddish colored stretch marks around your abdomen, after giving birth the color will change color and tend to look shiny. Furthermore, it is fainter and blends with your skin tone, even though it is not completely lost.

Try to live a healthy diet and exercise that focuses on the stomach, such as sit-ups. Certain yoga movements can help the stomach condition back to normal. Previously, consult your doctor to find out the recommended diet and exercise movements.

3. Breast

Your breasts will likely appear red, swollen, painful and full of milk about 1-2 days after giving birth. On day 3-4, after swelling decreases, the breasts will appear to relax. Your breasts will also produce lots of milk for the next few weeks, so most women experience leaks in the clothes they wear.

A simple way to overcome this is to breastfeed. If you are not breastfeeding, milk, but not to empty. This is because naturally when the breasts are empty, the body will reproduce. In addition, you can attach cold compress pads. If the pain continues for several days, ask the doctor. It could be a symptom of a disease, such as a breast infection.

Many expect to have large breast forms after giving birth and breastfeeding. In fact, it is not uncommon for people to experience a slack shape and look smaller after giving birth and breastfeeding.

4. Feet

Swollen feet or varicose veins, commonly experienced by those of you who have just given birth. Actually, this condition is very likely to have occurred since the time of pregnancy. Regular walking can help reduce swollen feet, especially if accompanied by weight loss after childbirth. Although regular walking cannot eliminate varicose veins completely, it can at least reduce the size of varicose veins.

5. Hair

Hair will lose about 100 pieces per day in normal conditions, but not so for pregnant women. Most pregnant women will feel thicker and more luminous hair. Unfortunately, after giving birth, the condition of the hair will return to normal. The body naturally releases excess hair obtained during pregnancy.

This is due to decreased estrogen levels returning to normal levels after giving birth. Don't worry, this usually happens only around 3-4 months after giving birth and the hair will return to normal within 6-12 months.

6. Skin

Some pregnant women experience changes in skin color around the eyes or grow more pimples than usual. After giving birth, dark colors or pimples will soon decrease. However, there are some women who experience red rashes around the mouth and cheeks or very dry skin. This condition will usually disappear within a few weeks.

7. Bleeding

After a normal delivery or by cesarean section, you will experience bleeding or commonly called lochia, which consists of remaining blood, mucus, and also the remaining tissue from the lining of the uterus. In many women, there will be a lot of bleeding in the first 3-10 days after delivery, sometimes even more than bleeding during menstruation, but this is normal and will decrease over the next few weeks. You also don't need to worry if suddenly blood comes out or blood clots occur, this is also normal. However, if you think that bleeding is abnormal, you should immediately tell your doctor.

The Importance of Conducting a post-childbirth Examination

Having a newborn baby will say you will spend most of your time, but don't miss a post-natal checkup schedule to the doctor. The examination usually takes around 6-8 weeks after giving birth. At the time of the examination, you can ask your doctor for advice on various things, ranging from physical complaints to emotions.

The process of giving birth will change the body of a woman. By implementing a healthy diet and moderate exercise, it is expected to accelerate the post-natal recovery process. But if you feel something is disturbing, consult your doctor as soon as possible to get the right treatment.
