Which is more danger: most sugar or salt?

We have often heard that most foods that are sweet or salty are harmful to health. Both sugar and salt each have their own risks for the body.

However, in between, which one is worse? Is it mostly sugar or mostly salt? Sugar needed humans as a source of simple carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are needed to produce calories (energy). Energy itself is used to perform various tasks. For example cognitive functioning of the brain, digestive system function, and body movement functions. Meanwhile, a mineral substance called sodium contained in salt is needed to keep the body fluid balance.

Basically, any excess intake is not good for your health. However, there is nothing wrong to find out the comparison of hazards between the diet of most sugars and most salt.

The dangers of most salts

The greatest concern of nutritionists and health workers around the dangers of most salts is the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). This is because in the body, the sodium in the salt is responsible for retaining fluid in the body.

If a person is mostly salt, more fluid builds up or gets stuck in blood vessels, kidneys, heart, and brain. As a result, he may have hypertension. Hypertension can increase the risk of fatal complications such as heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke.

Most sugar turns out to be more dangerous


The danger of most sugar consumption is much more complicated than salt. If most salts increase the risk of heart disease, most of the sugar effects can spread everywhere. Excess sugar will be stored body as fat reserves. So eating most sugar makes us fat fast.

However, most eating sugar can also increase the risk of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer. This is because excess sugar levels can cause inflammation and aging of cells in the body. As described by nutritionists from Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Mike Roussell, most of the sugar is more dangerous than most salt because they are both related.

If we are mostly sugar, the body will produce the hormone insulin to digest the sugar. In fact, the hormone insulin will improve the function of sodium to hold fluid in the kidney. This certainly leads to the same effect as most salt eaters, which is the risk of hypertension.

Although most sugar is more harmful than excess salt, it does not mean we should not eat both at all. The reason, as already explained before, the body still needs sugar and salt within reasonable limits.

According to the recommendation from the Ministry of Health, teenagers and adults should limit the consumption of sugar as much as 5-9 teaspoons a day. For salt intake, limit to one teaspoon a day. We should also avoid the consumption of food or packaged snacks. Because the packaging food has a sugar content and salt is much higher than the food we ourselves.
