Obesity is a problem in this century that requires serious handling. The number of cases of excess body weight is increasing. This is influenced by various factors, one of which is a sedentary lifestyle with a diet high in fat and rarely exercise.
A person with excess body weight often has dizziness and headaches. One of the things that you should be aware of if there are complaints of dizziness and headaches is the occurrence of interference in the central nervous system, or brain.
Why do people with excess body weight experience this complaint? Here are three diseases with symptoms of dizziness and headaches, which can stalk people with excess body weight:
1. High blood pressure
High blood pressure is a disorder that can be found in someone with excess weight. Uncontrolled high blood pressure conditions can cause a variety of complaints, such as dizziness and headaches.
In addition to high blood pressure, a person with excess body weight also has a higher risk for dyslipidemia (disorders of cholesterol metabolism), and diabetes.
Not only that, blood pressure is not well controlled, along with various other metabolic diseases, potentially causing long-term complications such as heart disease and stroke.
2. Carotid artery disorders
Carotid artery disease can be caused by a blockage in one or both arteries of the carotid arteries (blood vessels that deliver blood from the heart to the brain). This condition is triggered by the presence of atherosclerotic plaque.
Atherosclerotic plaque is common in obese people, and occurs due to accumulation of plaque containing cholesterol, metabolic waste materials, and calcium. This plaque causes the blood vessels to become smaller and the blood flow becomes less.
In addition, decreased blood flow to the brain can cause brain cell metabolic disorders. This can then trigger a number of disorders, such as dizziness and headaches. If the artery blockage of carotid artery has reached 80% of blood vessel diameter, then the person has a high risk for having a stroke.
Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or mild stroke
TIA is a reduction in blood flow to the brain for a while due to blockage of blood vessels. This condition is characterized by headache, dizziness, weakness on one side of the body, tingling or sudden paralysis. Usually these complaints are temporary and may return within 24 hours.
The cause of TIA is a blockage of blood flow to the part of the brain briefly, leaving no lasting damage. There are several factors that increase the risk of TIA, namely:
- History of heart disease
- Heart rhythm disturbance
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Smoke
If a person has a TIA, then he has a higher risk for stroke and permanent brain disorders. Therefore, a person with a TIA needs to have a full examination and strict handling.
So, if you often complain of dizziness or headaches, do not be underestimated. Especially when you are also obese. Immediately see a doctor to find out the cause behind it. Later doctors will perform an examination to establish a diagnosis and seek appropriate treatment.
